Called to make an apt for my 5000 mile checkup today. And the dealer said my truck may or may not have synthetic oil in it from the factory?? Said if it does, then the first change is at 10k miles. Sounds very strange to me.

Do you have a 4 cylinder? If not he's lying to you.

The 4 cylinders come with it as far as I am aware. Our trucks just use regular old oil every 5,000 miles, but you can use synthetic if you wish but its still 5,000 mile intervals. Maybe the 2016s use something different and at a different interval than our trucks.

4.0 has standard dino oil. Did they give you the first 5 oil changes free? That was standard when I bought mine. Seems like they're trying to skimp and save money on their end.

If its a free oil change, go in and demand it at the 5k.

The 2015 V6 takes regular old dino oil according to the manual. Which means all the dealer owes you for free changes is dino oil. That was the case with my changes. That's why I now do my own changes.

Certain dealers and the individuals that work there never cease to amaze me with their lack of knowledge.

if the dealer does not know what oil to put in it.... DONT BOTHER WITH THE DEALER.... seriously, save yourself the time money and frustration, buy a 10 pack of oem filters on ebay for 45 bucks, and go to walmart and get yourself a 5 qt jug of 0w-30 Mobil 1 full syn (my choice, but any 0/5w-30 will do) and do the change yourself.

Only then will you have peace of mind.... cus after my dealer just about started my truck without oil in it... ill never go to a dealer again

This might be shocking to people, but I'm sure more than a few dealers just put Toyota (or whoever is cheapest) 0w-20 in every engine on every change. No one would be able to tell the difference and the engine would last the warranty period at the least. I've heard of this practice at a particular dealer before.

In his defense, he did ask for the VIN which I didn't have in front of me. The dealer, Acton Toyota in Littleton MA has a great reputation. Besides, the service advisor is not the guy that will be working on my truck.

It's very possible that with the 2016's out, and a busy day, the service guy on the phone wanted to run your VIN to avoid giving you incorrect information. The 2016's all take synthetic 0w-20 no matter what engine is sitting in the truck.

A desk jockey at the service counter hasn't likely been at the counter for 10 years. Food for thought.
