I want to replace my 2014 Entune Plus head with a new AM/FM/Disc/BT/GPS unit. Suggestions?

Entune is horrible and I only have the Plus model without the Audio App Suite. The only real good use I get out of it is the BT audio streaming from my iPhone. I don't pay for Sirius/XM and being that I have a satellite antenna on the roof I'd like to be able to use it somehow.

Can you all please make some recommendations on to where I should start with locating a worthy replacement unit or system.

    I want a
AM/FM/Disc/BT/GPS unit and be able to retain my steering wheel controls and backup camera display functionality of course.

I'd like to install it myself, so if any kits are needed that would be nice to know also.

    Thanks for any tips....

Curious to know as well. Had the same, and didn't think it was that bad, that's why I upgraded to an OEM system with Nav. Nothing beats the OEM look in my opinion. A lot of aftermarket ones look "gaudy" in my opinion. But to each his/hers own.

What as so bad about it OP?

    - The weather status is often inaccurate to my location (Houston)
    - The volume must be cranked when BT streaming
    - The HU auto plays last used app on the mobile device when starting the truck
    - There's no way to quickly dim or disable the screen backlight
    - The radio channel memory is spread between FM and AM making the audio control b/w FM/AM pointless
    - The voice command to the HU using the steering wheel control usually fails and asks you to repeat said cmd
    - The HU treats a voice command to the mobile device as an incoming call
    - The text alerts appear randomly and sometimes not at all
    - The voice command to the HU using the steering wheel control usually fails
    - The play/random controls are non responsive when BT streaming
    - Random is not random at all using BT streaming and often repeats the previously played tracks

These are the ones I can think of right now.

I mainly hope to make use of the sat antenna and get a good on board GPS unit that will do everything Entune will do.

Kenwood seems to be a good option (it uses Garmin Nav) but I'm reading they are very slow to boot/aquire sats and aggravating for those less patient.

I'm not concerned with the look really and would prefer an OEM look to not draw attention. Function and easy of use is more important to me.

Also, I did search and the built in forum search tool must display active threads first or rank results. It'd difficult to use. A keyword search shows la list of results of the same threads that I don't need. Google finds TW info better that TW does.

Interesting that you had/are having those types of issues with it. I used quite a few of those functions and didn't have any problem.

The weather thing I think it's not just you, so don't let that get to you. I had the same issue with mine, and still do with the unit that has Nav in it now. I think that's just something it does for some weird reason.

The BT volume is also controlled by the volume on the phone, not sure if you know that. If the volume on your phone isn't all the way up, then the HU has to be to offset of course. Might be a dumb comment on my part, but just in case.

On the radio channel memory, at least on mine, you could move the favorites up and down, or in order, so that you had FM all in a row, and then AM, and in my case since I have XM, then XM. That way, when sorting through, you go through that particular "mode" in order.

The voice commands I haven't really used, so can't really say anything about that. I would think it would happen like you said since I'm sure it's probably "sensitive", so with background noise, etc, seems like it could happen.

The text alerts things, that happened one in a long while. What I figured to fix that was, un-pair the Bluetooth, then pair it again, and that seemed to "fix" the issue. Didn't really have that problem after I did that. But it might depend on your phone as well, not sure.

And on the random BT playing, mine always seemed to work fine and it was already random. But I think I usually had it set to random on my phone as well so not sure if that had anything to do with it...

But in the end, it's up to you of course. if you don't like it, then you don't like it. No point in being "stuck" with something you don't like. Never really looked into other types of units, always wanted and liked the OEM look, so that's why I upgraded my non Nav unit, to the OEM with.

Not sure if this helped. But thanks for your response and for taking the time to read mine.

    Sure, thank as well.

I know about the mobile volume. If I have it on max volume and play an audio track, I usually have to turn the HU up to 75% to hear anything clearly over road noise.

I do the same with the radio channel memory, but if i select AM i only want to see AM, not the entire list of memory to scrub through.. just pointing out that they cut corners with the GUI design.

I definitely want to get a new in dash GPS option. The other reason is if I want to update a map using an aftermarket I won't be restricted to doing so using a dealer as you would with Entune.

I always get lifetime updates for my Garmin products and it's worth every penny if you use GPS heavily like me.

Good point on the map updates. I have a little portable Garmin unit as well, and it definitely pays off with the lifetime map updates. Kinda hoping that one day, somewhere along the line, someone figures out how to update the map on the Entune without going broke at the dealer. But if not, I'm sure it would take a while before the map gets so outdated that it needs to be updated.

Good luck in your endeavor then to find something! I'm sure there are a ton of options out there, it's probably more a matter of what you like and how much you're willing to pay to get it.

I just called Toyota to inquire about the cost of a new replacement head unit with GPS and the app suite.
    They quoted $3800

Even the parts desk guy was laughing...
