This may be a dumb question, but what if you have the chirping problem and do nothing? What will happen? Will the whole mechanism bust, will the pilot shaft wear out?

What if my throwout bearing / release bearing sleeve / pilot shaft is broke? How do I replace it?

Sorry for the 3 year later reply! There is a TSB out that addresses this and Toyota can now fix!

Which is...? Fix or "reset the clock" on the chirp?

Since we don't know what bigfro's secret TSB actually says it's hard to tell. Obviously if the clutch, TOB and shaft have failed they need to be replaced/fixed. But unless the slave cylinder is fixed then the problem is not "Fixed". This is what a fix looks like https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/2005-tacoma-v6-clutch-slave-cylinder-rebuild.387315/ The spring and piston part cost about $13. I "Fixed" mine 2 1/2 years ago shortly after I bought the truck and I've had no problems since. If you fix the slave cylinder, and you can do that any time, then the other parts won't fail.

Is this the sound that it will fix ? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fPr-r-FxlvY

I've been riding with that noise for the past year and a half (30K miles) It has not worsened but I feel like one day it will blow up on me

That's the sound. It comes and goes because probably since the TOB and arm are "loose" you don't know how they'll line up a a particular time. With the level of noise you have now is the time to fix it for $13 in parts rather than waiting and paying thousands later. Good luck.

I did the PDM kit and a centerforce clutch (100k miles w/ lots of towing- squealing since 60k). How many miles on your rig? I would do the PDM (PDMUSA.COM) and stock Aisin if I did it again....and a slave cyl rebuild maybe. The fact that it's squealing means shaft and bearing have play on their sliding surfaces. A local trans shop charged me 475 bucks to do the work, and that included flywheel machining, PDM kit install, and replacing the clutch. If you don't tow or have a bunch of city miles, you could just do the PDM kit for 400 maybe a little less, plus cost of the kit.

Alright hladum, I'm not there yet ( why slave cylinder needs a rebuild). I looked at the thread how to replace boot and spring, but how does this keep the TOB from wobbling on the transmission quill and start squeaking, since it's steel on aluminum?. Thanks man.

It preloads the TOB so it doesn't wobble.

I got 80K on my truck and have been riding dirty (chirping) since it had 55K. How is the change working for you?

In another thread you had posted that when turning off the truck a shudder goes through the whole truck.. I thought that was normal for the truck! Mine has done that since I got it! Do you still experience that shudder ?

Once I get my bonus (hopefully) I will install the PDM kit and the clutch, any other suggestions?

It's more of an rpm dependent shudder along with the one when you turn it off. Problem is, it SEEMED to appear after I had those guys put my centerforce in...but it could be like the lift where you are hypersensitive to everything afterwards. It may have been there before but I don't think so. Like I said, I would do the stock aisin with the URD/PDM KIT (which comes with modified TOB). Centerforce II has Aisin stamped all over it, and there are threads elsewhere about vibs going away when weights are cut off centerforces. Not so bad that I'm going there.

How long have you had the kit installed? Did the chirping sound go away?

Tried the Slave Cyl. fix, but didnt work for me :( But I agree, it's worth the hour of labor and $13 to see if it helps; it just may not work for everyone unfortunately.

I read about that slave cylinder earlier.. How hard is that job for somebody who has never done that before?

25k and March 2014. Indeed the chirping is gone. I really don't expect it to return for a long long time....which is how long I'm keeping the truck.
