Get a three ball set up. Otherwise, you may get caught with your pants down. Though most have gone to 2 inch in the weight Tacos are destined to tow, picking up an old utility trailer will be 1 7/8. I also have a step hitch as illustrated when not in use and a hitch with a hook which is great for a quick tow rope connection. Make sure you coat the inside of your hitch with grease before you insert it so it doesn't rust in place. Agree, leave a step in place when not towing. It is friends to shins and will protect your bumper....a little. I leave steps on both my truck and my wife's SUV. They are very convenient.

That's why I recommended the three ball with the hook, for cars with the old Bush stickers.

If somebody gets close enough to my truck that my hitch becomes an issue, especially if we're moving, I hope they eat it.

I just read the first page, aaaand...

I wonder if other vehicle forums whine like this one does. Don't get me wrong, I love this site, but this site whines more than a baby.

Back a while we welded up a HD hitch to a SAAB of all cars. On the way back home from the shop while at a stop sign, I was rear ended by a Caddy. The hitche was attached at 8 different points on the car. It rode up over the Caddy's bumper and went through his radiator. The rear wheels were in the air but it did nothing to the SAAB. Since then, every car I have owned except a couple of Corrollas got a trailer hitch .......getting rear ended is the most prevalent type of accident.

Contrary to what people are saying, it appears Ohio is the only state that actually outlaws it (base on a prior poster, but no evidence the bill passed). In a few states, they can't obscure your license plate if left in, but that is only due to interpretation, not specifically called out. At the very least, in the VAST majority of states, there is no such law regarding removing your ball mount.

It does appear that some cops use the excuse of obscuring the license plate to issue a ticket, but the laws don't appear to be specific to the tow connection. Cops will issue tickets for all kinds of thing that aren't illegal and let you deal with court.

If anyone can find a single other state than Ohio (also, would like citation as I found no evidence since the quoted statute reference a Michigan proposed bill) and post the code, please do, but otherwise stop saying that it is illegal most places. Several have been proposed over the years, so make sure the bill passed before posting the statute. One example is Michigan HB 5610 with the same wording as Ohio...never made it even to initial consideration.

Apparently there is so much misinformation that the cops have to publicly clarify.

I refuse to buy a trailer with anything but a 2" ball. I told a guy once to replace the coupler if he wanted to sell to me and he did.

If you want to be safe get one of these. It will ensure people stay extra far away from your bumper

Good advice. I would also grease the inside of the receiver to keep it from rusting in place and make for easy removal"

Most people are going off about draw bars and balls, not the hitches.

Never grease mine and never have a problem. Although I do not live in the frozen north. I also change draw bars for different drops every couple of months.

Good god man we get it it. You have no use for a hitch and hate it when people leave one on. You sound like the type that might like sitting on one tho.
