I have an 02 2wd Tacoma, TRD Offload Package and the whole shebang, but I have the 2.7 which for some reason didn't come with a rear locker. I was wondering if I could find a stock locker out of a tacoma with the 3.4 and just throw it into my rear axle, rather than swapping out the whole axle? I've heard the open differential axles are stronger than the ones with lockers anyways.

    Thanks, Devon

Just swap out axles out. Much easier and simple. You have a prerunner, and I have the actual 5 lug base model. I swapped in the whole axle. Everything was bolt on.

By just swapping in the locker, you'd have to mod your housing, which will be worse if you don't know what your doing.

Yes you are right about the diff differences, but they are marginal. Remember it's the diffs that are different, if your swapping diffs you won't retain the strength your thinking of. Housing, brake mounting, and hub mounting are all the same down to the bone.

Remember that's also if you find it cheap. I got my whole axle for only 500. Rebuilt by marlin crawler. Works like a charm.

I found this on TW and it says my 04 Tacoma DCSB 4x4 has an open diff but I have the E locker in the rear diff. I know it's in there cause I have pushed the button & both rear tires burn out.

If your truck did not come from the factory with the e-locker, then you have the 8.4" open diff. The axle housing for this diff is different from the 8.0" elocker diff. The gear carrier portions of the two diffs are not interchangable. At least not easily. It is not a simple swap. Much easier to swap the entire axle, hub to hub.

The B03A code in the door jamb is an indicator of the 4.10 gear ratio and is found on all TRD models with the v6. And all TRD's with the v6 came with the elocker.

There seem to be getting harder and harder to find. Every once in a while one will come up on the 1st gen B/S/T thread. Check your local craigslist adds. Another source is auto salvage yards.
