USGS topographical maps (topo). Lots of backcountry users like them for navigation when out in the hills. The street maps in the head unit do not work when you are 100 miles from nowhere.

Many of us have apps on our phones that will run some version of topo maps. It would be nice if the Entune screen could just mirror our phones.

    Thank you.

That does sound very useful. I was lost once hiking with the dogs and it suckes. Luckily I had them to follow their own sent back the way we came.

Has elevation vs just roads and color splotches. Really important for offload, hikers, and other purposes.

Update on the Service visit this morning. I asked a few techs and service advisors. No one had a clue. Asked a salesman to sit in a truck, most of them were busy and unable to help. Didn't see anything in the showroom that I could play with either.

    Sorry, Mission failed.

I walked around anyways and noticed 2 different radios in the tacoma though. Completely flat, and the other one with buttons. Both with touchscreen.

I agree with zinger. I've heard around $250 just to update it. Of course that's Canadian dollars, so a buck and a half in the States.

    Welcome, BMW i3 Electric car.

To add one thing to the Navi discussion, I will say that it appears the maps have been recently updated. Just finished construction of a new freeway ramp system in my area. Went from 3 ramps to 9. Project finished about 3 months ago and the new ramps are in the Navi.

Think about it. Yes, they put a GoPro mount in and I realize lots of folks use the truck for off-roading. However, where I live lots of people use them as their hunting truck. It'd be a cool feature. People that hunt understand I'm sure

I live someplace that most people don't know is a state. My 2015 shows all the forest roads and some that are not marked. Is only supplemental to my Garmin.

Did some research and made some inquiries. I was thinking of upgrading the microsd 16gb card to a 128gb. Copy over all the contents of the sd card, see if there was an app that would run some topo's on the stock head unit, or a couple of other tricks.

It would appear, after trying to clone the SD card, that there is a ~512mb protected EEPROM on the cards preventing the full important licensing and other stuff from being copied over to a new card. So an image of the card is ~11.9gb vs the actual contents of ~12.5gb - so that theory is squashed unless someone has access to some expensive writers and 'special' sd cards.

I know this was off on a tangent, but loading additional maps in a different format was my goal here to see if I could get the nav unit to recognize any of them.

-----We could start a petition to Toyota to allow the addition of some of our own custom maps similar to the way Garmin and other manufacturers have. Like .gpx files and such. I mean, they are adding GoPro mounts to all the 2016, why not an update to custom maps since even the commercials are advertising "OFF ROAD" Capabilities and fun.

Spoke to toyota corporate. Suggested the addition of topo maps or rather the option of letting us load custom maps to the units. ,,,,.... PETITION and tons of signatures to raise awareness was suggested.

Have you looked into any way to screen mirror a phone onto the head unit? Might be an easier option than the petition route. I appreciate all the work you are doing on this. I'm afraid the petition route may be a lost cause as the majority of Tacoma owners have never even seen a topo map let alone want to use one on their head unit.

If you could simply screen mirror then the majority of topo users could simply load the topo map APP of your choice on the phone then see it on the screen.

theres many apps that you can use for this on tablets.
If you do not have one you can usually get some android tablets rather cheap.

But even then could always get a good one to have for other uses as well. But either way there are apps you can get that have offline maps etc and just get a windshield mount and run it on there. I know a lot of people that do that instead. I'll probably be doing the same when I get the taco and go wheeling.

Yep. this is what I currently do for both work and pleasure on either a tablet or my S6 with Backcountry Navigator. However, it just seems a waist to have that beautiful in dash display and built in GPS and not be able to have it show up on their instead of some phone mounted to the dash.
