I have a 1998 Tacoma, 2.4 engine, automatic transmission rwd, shifter on the column.

I was driving down the road, the check engine light came on and the speedometer quit.
I took it to Autozone to have check engine light diagnosed. They told me that they believed that the speed sensor went bad.

My question, where is it located? Or does anyone have any diagram to show where it located?

    Thanks
    Terry

I just got done working on this issue (also a '98 2.4 with AT 'on the column'). The truck had the CEL on (code P0500)

The sensor is bolted to the driver-side of the transmission. It sends an electronic signal thru a wire (not speedo cable) to the cluster.
The cluster converts the signal for displaying, and likely sends the signal on to the ECM.

I replaced the sensor with a used one, but it didn't help. Then, I removed the cluster, and had it diagnosed and repaired at a local shop (all they do is repair speedometers). That fixed it.
