Sorry this happened. I've known people that have abandoned their vehicle after an accident that was their fault because they were under the influence. The DUI would be worse than leaving the scene since they would lose their license. They get caught hours later after the drug/alcohol level goes down under the legal limit or detection. You mentioned you contacted his insurance. Did they admit he was covered under their policy? I suspect he was on something or just didn't want to pay or have his insurance go up. Still a low-life. I think these hit-and-run scums ought to have their vehicle seized and auctioned off to cover your cost if caught.

    Why didn't you chase him?

I'd say in the States I handle auto claims, which are MD, VA and DC... between 3 and 5 percent of the claims I handle are Uninsured Motorist claims. That's a lot of uninsured drivers out there. And I know at least in MD, they fine you for every day you drive around uninsured but the assholes still do it and many of them get away with it. And of course, this has a negative effect on all us who play by the rules because they cause our rates to be higher.

Always a better idea to just get the tag number than to chase them. More true in some areas of the country than others, of course.

I thought doing the responsible thing would be best, but just got screwed instead.

It will most likely go into arbitration. Will not be seeing my deductible refunded in a long time.
