What Have You Done To Your 3rd Gen Today?

The added rigidity of a bumper makes frame bending worse. Soft bumpers reduce impulse, force/time, by deforming and crushing for more time than a stiff bumper if it quickly bounces something off of it. Also, bouncing an object off a stiff bumpers can impart much more force to the frame than accepting the object into a soft bumper and not making it bounce off.

I am going to seal one vent up with Dynamat and then seal the other one up with and 1/2 hose to redirecting the noise.

Not only that, but if he was hit hard enough for the frame to be bent it was a fairly serious impact. If that frame and bumper hadn't absorbed the force it could be transferred into the cabin and to the passengers inside resulting in far more severe injuries!

I'll gladly have my vehicle completely disintegrate around me as long at the forces are distributed by the exterior body panels and crumple zones of the frame and keep me and all my passengers from sustaining serious injury. This is how vehicles are engineered these days and it's also why people can literally walk away from very serious accidents. A vehicle can always be replaced!!

 

So I guess we are doomed to totaled trucks if we get rearended? Seems like this could be the rusted frame disease of the 2016s?

 

However a crumple zone is designed to absorb the impact not total the truck. And I was under the impression that crumple zones were not part of the actual frame. Maybe I'm wrong here?

 

The vehicle comes with soft bumpers. It's the off road armor bumpers that are stiff

 

Agreed. But we are seeing totalled trucks with bent frames from being rear ended with stock soft bumpers.

 

I'm not 100% sure, but the benefit of a truck is you have this huge bed to use to absorb impact forces!

To me is makes sense to perhaps even use portions of the frame back there to dissipate energy transfer to the cabin. Looking at those pictures it looks like the frame bent in very specific areas, where bends and curves are. i would not be surprised at all if this was by design!

 

I'm also now concerned about what will happen when I hang up my hitch going through a dip off road. Is the rear of the frame going to bend upward. How about if I lift the weight of the truck with a handyman in the reciever? Just thinking out loud here while having a shity day at work. Not meaning to come across angry.

 

Not a 2016 thing. Mine was totaled and it was a 2014. It did not even look that bad.

 

I read that someone had the same size with no issues, and they seem to be fine as far as I can tell.

It is likely designed to do that on a high force rear end collision.

Some materials/designs can withstand a significant force from a specific direction yet apply a similar force along a different axis and it won't react the same. Take an "I" beam, they can be used to hold up an enormous amount of weight when the force is applied as it's designed, but flip it on it's side and apply the same force and it will bend like it's lead.
