    2006 & 2016 DCSB TRD Off Road 6-Speed
My 2006 Tacoma Doublecab TRD Off Road hit 400k miles last night. The truck is still running great although there have been a few repairs including a one major repair, which I will discuss. The Tacoma remains awesome. The best vehicle I have ever owned. The truck is still in daily use but the accumulation of miles has slowed down, as I had a 2013 Jeep JKU Rubicon that I put 30k miles on and which I have since traded in on a 2016 DCSB TRD Off Road which now has about 2k miles on it.

As a reflection of how reliable this truck has been, at 396k I took it on a off-road trip to the Maze District of Canyonlands in October along with @bark beetle and his Tacoma. This trip included a stretch of 207 miles off-road (a few photos below).

I previously posted when I passed significant milestones

    at 350k miles:

I thought I would share some information for those that might be interested and continue the documentation on one of the higher mileage 2nd Gen trucks.

The truck was purchased new on July 27, 2006. I do not use the truck commercially or for work activities, miles are largely recreational as my daily work commute is about 10 miles each way.

This is how it sits today:

At 391,296 miles the clutch came apart. I went to shift from 1st to second after a stop, and it sounded a bit odd, then when shifting from 2nd to 3rd as I released the clutch it grenaded and I had no power. Lots of small parts and springs when they took it apart. The first time the truck ever needed to be towed. I needed a new clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing, etc.. Since the truck had nearly 392k on it and the transmission had to come out anyway for the clutch work at the dealer, I decided to throw in a used transmission. I found a 2014 6 speed manual from a 2014 truck wrecked in Indiana with 14969 miles for $1200 plus $200 shipping on car-part.com. The service manager at the dealer was great and agreed to accept freight delivery and install it when they put the clutch in. The transmission at 392k miles was working fine, but it had developed a noticeable whine in 6th gear and shifting was becoming a little quirky. An essentially new transmission not even ready for its first oil change for $1400 seemed worth it since my 16 year olds are now driving the truck. Drives like a new truck with the new transmission and clutch.

The original clutch had been replaced at 325k miles, so the second clutch only lasted 67k miles before coming apart. I suspect the wear-and-tear on the clutch mechanism from 391k miles combined with twin boys learning to drive a stick had something to do with it. At 353k I had a rear wheel bearing go out (again!) due to a axle seal leak (again!). Wheel bearings seem to be one of the few weak spots in these trucks.

Since the 350k mile update, the repairs have been:

394,452 replace both o2 sensors (original) and drivers side air/fuel ratio sensor (original)
391,296 replaced clutch, throw-out bearing, pressure plate and transmission
388,160 replaced coil pack on cylinder 6 (original)
378,765 front axle ADD, soldered electrical connections to fix problem going into 4WD
353,539 replaced passenger side rear axle seal (again!), wheel bearing (again!) and ABS sensor (original)
    351,993 replaced carrier bearing (original)

This is the complete repair history:

402,757 replace broken wire connection on clutch switch
394,452 replace both o2 sensors (original) and drivers side air/fuel ratio sensor (original)
391,296 replaced clutch, throw-out bearing, pressure plate and transmission
388,160 replaced coil pack on cylinder 6 (original)
378,765 front axle ADD, soldered electrical connections to fix problem going into 4WD
377,684 replaced front drivers seat with used seat
353,539 replaced passenger side rear axle seal (again!), wheel bearing (again!) and ABS sensor (original)
    351,993 replaced carrier bearing (original)
347,799 Replace front brake pads and rotors
346,113 Replaced RH and LH CV axles (axles were fine, boots torn)
327,315 Replaced idler pulleys and tensioner pully
325,291 Replaced clutch, pressure plate, TOB and resurface flywheel
293,810 Replace LH and RH front wheel bearings
293,810 Replace LH needle bearing in front differential (with ECGS bushing)
    268,410 Replace Transfer Case Actuator
240,866 Replace front brake pads and resurface rotors
    226,735 Replace idler pulley
    212,186 Replace U-Joint spider
149,612 Electrical short, replace fuse block
105,041 Replace front brake pads and resurface rotors
62,659 Replace front brake pads and resurface rotors
62,659 Replaced rear brake shoes (soaked in gear oil from axle seal failure)
62,659 Replace RH and LH rear wheel bearings
62,659 Replace RH and LH rear axle seals (Second Repair!)
29,013 Replace RH and LH rear axle seals
    10 Purchased 7/27/06

    Engine Oil

I have used Mobil 1 exclusively in this engine from the day I bought it. I drained the oil when I brought it home from the dealership. I use Mobil 1 EP 5W30 (EP=Extended Protection gold lid bottle), but have also used Mobil 1 AFE 0W30 (green lid bottle) a couple times during the deep winter months the last couple of years and think the engine sounds a little better after really cold (-10 F and lower) starts.

I frequently run 8-12k miles oil change intervals (OCI) on the M1 EP 5W30. I have run OCIs as long as 14.5k miles. I use oversize filters for the longer OCIs such as the Mobil 1 M1-209 or the Bosch Distance Plus D3422. I will occasionally run a OEM filter, but limit those OCIs to about 7500 miles.

Why am I running this truck this long? Since it is still running great and had been 100% reliable and never towed (until the clutch issue at 391,296 miles!), why not? Another reason is that I have twin boys and I was saving the truck for them to use in High School. Now that I have reached 400k miles and I have a 2016 I will not be driving this truck much as it will be driven by the boys.

A few recent photos of the truck. As you can see, lots of wheeling.

Incredible. I'd be happy with 250k! Great write-up.

BTW that's pretty good camera focus for 80mph...

Those two sound a bit dicey............

Congrats on keeping it going. All the 'ditch it at 100k' crowd are just weenies.

Nice write up. Your making everyone feel good about the choice of truck we all went with.

Out of curiosity, what octane have you been running?

I love reading about your truck in these mile marker threads.

Do I remember you saying you were going to pick up a 2016 and give this one to your kid?
