I've done a few :) I have my own shop, it's my side job. Lifts, brakes, oil....

I'm one of those guys that needs a clean engine bay, and oil coming out of a filter doesn't help...

Yeah I understand. To me I come from 1st gen 3.4 V6s where the filter is an absolute bitch so going to my 2nd gen was a dream.

I see the utility of these cartridge filters the 3rd gen runs though, being able to drain then simply unscrew it all in one area.

My 94 22re had the filter on the side, so that dumped all over the block, my 03, same thing, except you had to reach through the damn fender well.

I love the new filter location (if you can't tell!)

When taking off the filter housing be careful of the aluminium clip located around 11 o'clock position next to the oil filter housing. When I was changing my oil on 2014 Camry, that aluminium piece got in the way as I was taking the filter housing out. I just bent the aluminium piece away from the housing filter. FYI: The plastic oil filter housing is very durable and strong so I would not worry about it. The oil change is not that bad if you do drain the oil out from the housing. I actually like the filter housing setup better than the spin on.

:crapstorm:Instead of complaining will one of you rocket scientist invent an adapter to put on that will accept a spin on filter. Like with the old Chevy small blocks that were in the Chevy c10 pickups. I bet you would make millions selling the adapter to all the folks bitchin about the canister style.

Did those 2nd gens you worked on have the Denso OEM filter or another aftermarket filter? I noticed my filter's anti-drainback valve holds the oil pretty well, spilling nary a drop each time. I usually have to poke open the ADBV flap with a pick to drain the oil out of the filter.

Where is the best place to a good filter wrench (socket) for this. Not some Auto Zone POS.

If you have an old leather belt, wrap it around the filter. Works for me.
