Hi everyone, just got my Tacoma fro a salvage auction. It will go in reverse but will go to drive gear but will not drive. Tranny cooler broke from accident and auction sold it as run and drive and drove it thru the auction. The fan is stopped by the radiator. A mobile mecanic said I need a new one but hopefully not. Second opinion, please help.

You need transmission fluid otherwise that truck won't drive at all. Fill her up and she'll drive. Fix the cooler too or it'll all leak out.

+1 on buying salvage! Thats where my current and last Tacoma came from. Fun projects, even though frustrating at times!

Frustrating but fun, I was hoping transmission was ok though. I put 6.5 qts. Of transmission fluids but still not driving, reverse is ok.

If reverse is working then your torque converter could possible be okay, Have you tried pulling the transmission pan and checking the filter for any signs of damage? Usually if you find a lot of metal shavings in the pan or fluid it indicates you may be in need of a new transmission. However if everything looks clear your problem may be that you need to adjust the transmission shifter cable as it may not be properly getting the transmission into drive gear. (That would be my theory)

Lets just hope its not the transmission that needs replacing, is the transmission cooler already repaired?
