I love being a teacher, I just have to say it

I believe in checking for understanding before students leave the room and classwork can be part of that. I teach all but one of my classes in my classroom and I have a stereo system that really fills my square room. I love sharing music with them, especially great songs that were popular when they weren't listening to music.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DYd57rkvnpQ

Music seems to be very powerful to my students. I always liked and enjoyed music, but for some of my students, it is the only thing that is constant for them. They always have their phones and head phones and it provides a place to get away to.
I have a quote up on the wall that says, "I wish I can unhear all my favorite songs so I can hear them for the first time again." Some students have talked to me about it and it's made some good conversations.

I love being a teacher and I can't imagine doing anything else.

    I. Hate. School. Don't get me wrong, I'm really glad that I stuck it out and got my degree, but I also worked full time during most of my college years. Making money > sitting in class, every time.

I did create myself an awesome schedule though. I only had classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays (with a 15 hour course load) but I had a 4 day weekend every single week. It was awesome. I worked on my truck, I went fishing, camping, hiking, partying, pretty much anything I wanted to do.

Mondays were "get your school shit done" days.

Being in the "real world" is fantastic and terrible at the same time. Do I miss all the free time I had? Hell yeah. Do I miss sitting in class? Hell no.

    Also yoga pants.

I promise your future employer will not hit you with a calculus or thermodynamics test... It just won't happen. Unless you are going into research or something like that, do the bare minimum and scrape by with the lowest grades possible... School is a joke and your grades are no indication of how successful you will be in the "real world". All you need to know when applying for a job is... attitude>aptitude.

I have worked for over 30 years with adults who act like children. And no, this is not a pep talk I would personally give to my children.

Outstanding academic track records can be a springboard into a better school and better career opportunities to start off a career. To say Grades do not matter is ignorant at best.

I must apologize to Z50King... I respect your career as a teacher, and I was partially kidding... and I didn't see your previous post. Perhaps I should have worked harder on my reading comprehension! Sorry sir.

School is a place where student's learn how to think critically, learn social behavior skills, and learn skills for the real world. Our education system has gone to shit, but with the state of average parenting skills this is the only place where children have a chance to learn most of these things.

Critical thinking is a serious national deficit.

I was shocked at just how many of my fellow students could not think critically.

C's get degrees, but for those in the medical or engineering world, grades are much more important.

With that said I aced every single one of my upper level classes. Before then, I was a mid to high C average student.

College for me was 15 hours of credits a semester plus a full time job. Such a beating. I'll take the real world any day.

Grades matter if you are becoming a doctor, lawyer, or engineer

Because we are talking about what kids learn in school, I must say that some kids learn honesty.

I have a Teacher's Aide in my sixth period class who is a student in my seventh period class. I always have him grade sixth period's homework during sixth period. One day last week, I walked around and collected the homework during seventh period and this kid didn't give me any homework. I didn't say anything, but his honesty in not copying the homework he graded the period before really impressed me. I wasn't impressed by his lack of homework, but we can work on that

I learned that pretty quick too.

My favorite teacher in high school was my chemistry and physics teacher. Just about every day I'd come to class he'd ask if I did my homework, the answer was almost always no, but he didn't care as much because I wouldn't bullshit him or try to lie about doing it and "not having it with me" or whatever. I see him from time to time around town and he likes to think I made a B in both of his classes, but I specifically remember barely making C's

It wasn't because I'm a dumbass. I just didn't try. School never interested me. Then I got to college, finally got finished with all the bullshit liberal arts classes they make you take, and suddenly became fascinated with my course work (hints the straight A's the last 2 semesters and absolutely dominating my capstone). It's just a shame that after being in school for 18+ years I was only ever presented material that interested me in the last 2 semesters I was in college.

Last I checked (I was active duty Officer in the USAF up until a few years ago) it is considered a "rated" career field which means it is competitive and they were only taking Pilot Qualified officer candidates for the UAV jobs. So to answer your question yes...

Air Force Pilot and military pilot selection in general is a very competitive career field and grades are a huge part of the "whole person" evaluation criteria along with very demanding physical (medical qual) requirements.
