I found a 2001 Tacoma online and bought it. Well, first fill-up and I smelled gas. I checked it out when I got home and looks like the tank is leaking at the seam toward inside of truck near front. I'm hoping somebody has a better (cheaper) suggestion than "buy a new one". What can I do??

I think it's worth the money when it comes to your gas tank man. You could try sealing it but it's gasoline you're talking about here. You would have to drop it down & drain it out and seal it from the inside if it is on the seam. Maybe you could get away with sealing from the outside but....

    Safety issue.

Buy a junkyard tank if new is cost prohibitive.

I know there were a lot of frame issues with rust, but was it not common with the tanks? I found a used tank 2 hours away, but I don't want to drive up and it be junk.

That's not as far as the one I found. I may look into that.

And has anyone found an aftermarket option, or only OEM? I'm seeing $500 prices. I thought I found a good deal on a Tacoma. Bought it online. Undecided, but figure I would use it for a daily driver or possibly sell for a slight profit. I guess I will see how that pans out as the continued investments begin.

Best to take the bed off for easy access?

    Bump.

I would bet it's easier to pull the bed off, hopefully someone else chimes in with the other answers for you.

ive heard it's easier to pull the bed off. 3 guys to lift it. with just removing 4 bolts and 2 wiring harnesses.

    or something to that effect.

there are fuel tank repairing solutions at auto parts stores.

or you could empty your tank, remove the bed, put an air line into the fuel tank, and blow all the fuel vapor out (after an hour or 2 of air being pushed into it) then repair the tank like normal since there shouldn't be any combustible liquids left inside. if there is, keep blowing air til everything has been evacuated. that's up to you.

either way. you don't have to buy a new tank.
