hello everyone. i recently planned to add a starter switch on my tacoma 98 2.4L. everything works fine but i want to know if what i did would make any affect on my battery charging or anything else. below are the pictures. i basically cut off the thin black wire with white stripe coming from starter to fuse box and added starter switch. would it cause any problems? thanks in advance.

It looks like he's making a anti-theft switch, but needs to use better wire.

I doubt it's a concourse build, it's wire, it's paired. And probably overkill. Sure better could be used but if it's "proof of idea" or similar why waste good wire.

That and I doubt any of us have always had on hand or could afford exactly what we needed at the time of idea origination.
Ok, so it looks hack, so what? it'll work long enough to figure out if that's what he wants to do.

no, if he wanted that he would have said that, and you don't hack the starter for that, you tap into the ignition wire from the fuse box and put a switch there for an anti theft switch.

we are just trying to be guessing here until he replies but I can only assume he has electrical issues or a bad key switch

thanks for the reply guys. i am trying to make it anti theft. someone broke in last week and messed up ignition wires. the white wire i used in pic is just a sample, the best i could find to show what i wanna do.
the actual wire is going to run under the fuse box and totally hidden. hopefully it doesnt mess up and other circuits.

Gee. I didn't realize my simple question was any more than a simple question.

Thanks for taking the time to read into my post all that extra information in that I apparently forgot to write.

then don't mess with the starter wires, simply locate the main ignition wire or the power wire for the EFI relay for the fuse box under the hood and put a switch there to disable it and the engine cant run until you turn on your hidden switch, even if they jump the starter because you have no spark. just find a dry out of the way place to locate the switch.

not sure how often you need to disable it, but if its just once in a while, then you can just pull the EFI relay and keep in in your pocket, that disables the truck ignition and fuel pump rather then rig a switch

yeah, OP. actual starter wires from the battery are 4 gauge. as in, they're frigging huge and can handle much more power than that lamp wire can. buy a new cable and replace the one you cut.

instead, find the solenoid wire. it uses less amperage than a lamp wire normally has, and is easier to work with. the solenoid is located on the starter and has only 1 wire coming off of it. here is a pic

the circled connector is the wire you wan't to tap into. the starter is always connected to the battery. this is the only way to start the motor. and if you want to add extra security measures to prevent people from stealing your truck. trace this wire to the inside of your cab and cut/splice into it there. thats how you should do it. now go to your truck and replace that cable, and do this mod.

thanks for the reply. the solenoid wire is the one i cut. and i added 12 gauge wire to it instead of lamp wire. it works fine so far. im just wondering if it would mess up altenator charging the battery? thanks again.

When I installed an anti-theft switch, I simply spliced a switch into the ground wire of the fuel pump. It'll crank all day long but won't ever start. Splice was no where near hood or ignition areas so no dumba$$ thief would ever find it. Also, no risk of messing anything else up. Just my $0.02

I used to live in Valley Village, just south of Victory Bl. Thats the reason there is a giant dent in the side of my truck. Best anti-theft if to move to a lower crime area, we both know Arleta is not a good place to be. An anti-theft switch is not going to stop the next punk from breaking in and tearing up the ignition before realizing they cant start it.

That being said, download the FSM. The poster above had a good suggestion by making a fuel pump cutoff switch. The harness come through the firewall behind the kick panel and runs under the seat.
