Pretty new here, and I don't have a ton of mechanical skills...

Was wondering what you guys thought about Toyota recommended maintenance.. Ex: transmission flushes etc.. Can it go longer than what they recommend?

Also, getting my oil changed recently had a mechanic say my read did fluid was getting dark, should this be changed often?

Flush the transmission fluid every 60k or earlier, change the differentials, transfer case, brake fluid, steering fluid every 20k-30k, and the oil every 5k. Don't forget about the Spark plugs every 30k, a new air filter and cabin air filter once or twice a year.

Learn to do it yourself you'll save yourself thousands of dollars, know it was done correctly, and will learn about your truck. Everything mentioned is very easy with to do, we're here to help and there's a diy for everything mentioned.

That's awesome man, thanks for the advice.

I'm consistently surprised with what a great community there is here a Tacoma world.

    Thanks again.

Don't be fooled - we're all a bunch of jerks.

Another question - I bought my 08 4x4 TRD from a Toyota dealer with 64k on it. Since I have owned it I haven't changed the transmission or differentials..Not sure if anything was done before I got it.

I've seen here that some claim if the trans fluid doesn't get changed on time it might be a bad idea to change it. I have 106k on it now.

Going to change everything in the next couple days.

Change the fluids. It is not difficult and there is a great DIY write-up here on TW. I wouldn't wait much longer as your truck is overdue for fresh fluids.

Do you have an owners manual? The maintenance recommendations will be listed for your particular truck. THe maintenance requirements can be different depending on what year you have.

For my 07...the Auto transmission doesn't need to be flushed or changed for 100k miles.

If this is a 'new' truck to you...I wouldn't let it wait. Get everything done for peace of mind. Because you just don't know the history of the truck. As far as you know, you want that truck to last forever. The more TLC you give it now, the better.

    Good luck!
