Does anyone know if 2nd Gen immobilizer requires a chipped key present during start only,
or does ECU check for chip presence intermittently/after startup (during operation of truck) also?

A good question. I have no idea... That would depend on the programming.

Try it out. Get an un-chipped key made at Lowes etc.

Start the truck with the Un-chipped Key while having the chipped key close enough to trigger the immobilizer to allow startup.

Then walk away with the chipped key and see if the truck continues to run.

    Let us know the results.

    Right. Thanks.
Am considering experiment as you suggest, but had read elsewhere that immobilizer trouble codes might force a dealer visit for reset (?)
Anybody know anything specific this regard???

You don't say, but I'm pretty sure 4 cylinder trucks don't have chipped keys.

I'm a bit confused by what you're asking...and only because I'm pretty sure you're not able to remove the key from the ignition without turning the truck off.

So, essentially.....you probably can't run the truck without the key/codes sensing that the key is still in the ignition.

    Or maybe that's just an 07 thing?>

    So, for the back story:
Am removing keys from my pocket...
Advancedkeys.com makes a knob style start that can replace key in ignition. Knob uses a "bobbed" chipped or unchipped key.
Can use their ignition module with knob (or a start button as has been discussed on this forum). It requires unlock pulse to IM to enable start button/knob.
OR start truck with Remote Start (with immobilizer module installed with RS) and POSSIBLY use unchipped key in knob. This is preferable to me, as installed knob/key would then require remote start to enable, which is more secure than chipped key bobbed and installed or unlock pulse to activate knob/button. Also, it removes the issue of steering lock when hoping to carry no keys....
Queried Advanced Keys on this directly, their response so far is that some vehicles with throw a code, others not.

So my question more accurately is:
If I start my truck via remote start, can I use and unchipped key in ignition afterward to drive off?
Does immobilizer function during starting or is key/chip checked after start at any point?
If immobilizer is triggered does this require trip to dealer for any sort of reset?
Thanks for help from TW group intelligence!

Can you zip tie a chipped key under the dash somewear? I would think that would solve all your problems.

    Thanks.
    Prefer better security:
plan as described requires my remote start fob/app.
Key chip stored in vehicle= anyone drives away!!!
Like the rig too much for that... .

Have you checked into a factory remote start?

Even though the factory remote start is really basic, it might be your best option.

I regularly start my truck with a non chipped key in the ignition holding a chipped key very close while turning. Then lock up and walk inside while it's warming up. Drive around to where ever i'm going with the non chipped in the ignition and chipped in my pocket. No codes, no problems on a 2005. Sometimes the truck doesn't want to start up very well even with the two key butts on top of each other.

This depends on your remote start system and how it is configured and/or programmed to allow driving after a remote start. Most remote start systems with factory immobilizer units send the information from the chip to the system to allow starting.

After remote start and the doors have been unlocked, typically the system waits for a configured time for a specific action from the driver (usually a brake press) to keep the engine/system running.

At this point it has already been started with the immobilizer validated so in theory an unchipped key is all that is needed to unlock the steering wheel provided you were able to unlock the doors (not break in).

Even after remote start has completed the doors should remain locked if this is what you are worried about.

It would have to be VERY close to the ignition. Like within an inch.

On my 05 I can start it with a chipped key near the ignition and drive with an unchipped key IN the ignition. It seems to only be required for startup.
