Most of you guys would probably never really notice or care about this stuff but not too long ago I got a job selling insurance. I started kinda noticing which cars and trucks seem to always cost alot to insure vs cars of the same year and value. (FYI, KIA IS THE MOST EXPENSIVE TO INSURE BELIEVE IT OR NOT!) Anyway, I was cleaning out glove box a few minutes ago and found the first insurance bill for my Tacoma when bought new in 2006. Coverage at the time was...

    25/50/25 liability
full comp and collision coverage with rental car reimbursement and road side assistance
    $100 comp deductible
$1000 collision deductible (I know its high but I fix my vehicles myself so dont care)
    $25,000 medical
    25/50/25 uninsured motorist

    premium in 2006 was $87 a month

    TODAY

    Coverage is...

    50/100/50 liability
full comp and collision coverage with rental car reimbursement and road side assistance
$0 comp deductible (yes 0$ comp deductible, bust a windshield... $0, hale... $0, etc)
$1000 collision deductible (I know its high but I fix my vehicles myself so dont care)
    $25,000 medical
    25/30/15 uninsured motorist

premium as of today 12/11/2015 is $113 (a month)

Louisiana has the highest auto insurance rates in the country! For this vehicle to be this cheap to insure, just another factor that makes it an ever better truck!

I know I am interested and i think some other folks considering buying a Tacoma may also be interested, so if you want to, maybe post the year of your truck, rates and state. May help some "on the fence" folks thinking of getting a Tacoma :)

Amount of damage for a given speed accident, parts and labor repair costs, theft risk, safety devices (to protect occupants), actuarials on accident involvements and moving violations all are part of the 'vehicle' risk, all colored by what state you are in and even where within that state.

Driver age, record, address and even credit score make up most of the rest of the assessment to arrive at a cost.

It's almost impossible to gain anything from comparing the prices others pay, because there are too many unknowns. For example, my coverage on my '13 is a great deal higher than yours, yet my cost is around your '06 amount.

$100 premium in LA is equivalent to $50 in FLA. Lets face it, even with 2005-2015 upgrade, if I total this truck I MAY get $11,000 for it from the insurance company. Yours is worth 3x as much. LA rates are outrageous! I have a friend in northern Cali, we were chatting a few months back and he was biatchin' that he had to pay his insurance this month. He has a Nissan about the same age. I asked how much it was and he said $275! I was like.. WHAT $275 a month?!? He laughed and said no, for 6 months.

My original post I think must be looked at with the above considerations you mentioned. I know it is not an exact science, but if people post the state and rate then others can make a judgement if insurance is a big concern for them.

We get raked over the coals in BC for insurance. I pay $185 a month and my truck is insured only for pleasure use, no commuting to work. It was $210 with commuting.

Damn! Why are rates so high in Canada? In Louisiana we have some of the highest insurance rates in the US and I thought ours were bad...

I got rid of a 08' Honda Ridgeline RTL for my taco. The new cost of that truck was around 45k. I called my insurence agent and asked her to take my exact coverages, and compare it to the rrick I was buying. A 13' TRD Sport DCLB. The taco is $13 a month cheaper.

I see people trying to compare their rates on every auto message board I've ever belonged to. And I always tell people it's a useless exercise. There are two many variables that will cause your rates to be different, and even in some cases much different than another person's driving the same year, make, model and trim. Just some of them: Your age, your driving record, where you live, your credit score, other drivers in your household, and your gender.

In order to determine how Tacomas compare to other vehicles to insure, you could do it two ways: Find out what Tacoma's IRG (Insurance Rating Group) is... actuary departments use this number in computing rates for vehicles and it's largely determined by that vehicle's history of accident frequency and average cost of repairs. Or... survey about 10,000 people across the country for every make, model, and year of vehicle out there and then you have a fair sample size.

Me... I just get a quote and see if it's more or less than the vehicle it's replacing. If it's less or about the same, I'm happy.

I can do that! I'll try to remember tomorrow to pull the symbol/number at work. We can read them from the system on every vehicle we quote. Good idea, didn't think of that.

Cool. I'm no longer in Underwriting so I don't have access to the IRG tables. I'd love to see what code is assigned to the Tacoma trims. I'm guessing the SR and SR5 might be one lower than the other trims.

I hope your State minimum is at least 50/100/50 or that you literally have no net worth so nobody can ever come after you for damages when your coverages are not enough to protect you.

I pay $73 bucks a month. That is with my 99 Taco on full coverage as well. So a 99 and a 13 both with same coverages. $1000 deductible. I also get autopay discount, homeowner discount and multiple vehicle discount. This is in Nebraska.

Your choice. Better than carrying no insurance.
