so a car with a priest, a rabbi, and a duck ran into me at a redlight. Luckily I am a body technician at Toyota. But I am curious of what my depreciation value check will be. I know I will need a complete rear bumper. I will have to adjust the bed and adjust the tailgate. Possibly new exhaust. I have Usaa insurance. Anyone been through this with a vehicle this new. Less than 2k on it. My poor taco....

Everyone lived and no injuries = good out come

Sorry for the accident. A nice big ass steel rear bumper would be a nice thing in this case = totaled car truck no or very little damage.

    Won't & couldn't debate that logic...

While I still don't believe car crashes end well, I do applaud your optimistic, "glass half full" view...we both share that mindset.

    OP, sorry for the :threadjacked:

I was in a rear end as well (Subaru), here is what you need to be careful with these new Taco though.
    • Ensure your frame didn't buckle in the rear.
    • Depreciation value is: take what your current value- what the truck can be sold for with accident report on carfax. The difference is your diminished value.

    Best of luck.

Okay so anyway, you're good, OP. USAA will take care of you. I've dealt with them twice in the last twelve months and they did us solid both times.

Back to the topic at hand.....I did a lot of research on diminished value when I was hit by another driver. The best way to be successful in filing a diminished value claim includes the following:

    1. Get your car fixed and make sure the repairs are done properly
    2. Research to see if your state acknowledges diminished value claims and what type of success other drivers have had in getting money
    3. Get a 3rd party appraisal of your car's diminished value. Research companies and use a reputable one as you will spend $300-400 on the appraisal. They will provide you with a report that shows your pre/post value solely due to the fact you now have an accident listed on your carfax
    4. Send a request letter to the at fault driver's insurance company and attach the appraisal

After that, you have to bug the hell out of them as they hate paying diminished value. The insurance company I was working with had another 3rd party appraisal done and ended up offering close to what I was asking for. Sometimes they will either low ball you (in which you need to negotiate back and forth) or try to give you some BS as to why they shouldn't have to pay you. In the end, you can send a letter threatening to sue their insured (the person who hit you). That will usually make them pay up or you go through small claims court and sue the other driver (the insurance company is liable for them and if you win they will pay you).

In most states you can submit a diminished value claim up to 2 years after your accident.

I got $3000 in diminished value for repairs that totaled $7500. This was on a 2010 Audi A4 in 2013.

Ok OP, sorry to hear about your loss. Try to take better care of your taco and watch out for people that want to rear end you.

Look on the bright side. That 2016 still has a purdy mouth.
