I've been doing some searching lately trying to figure out an elegant solution to a problem I have, and figured yall could help. I'm trying to find a way to add some grip to the surface of my tailgate, so that when I have it down the dog isn't slipping and sliding when jumping in and out.

I've thought about using grip tape on the ridges, but don't know how much help that would be for the hound. My best idea is finding a piece of rubber, hopefully a bit thinner than the bed mat and drilling it out so that I can bolt it up to the current slippery surface.

Anyone ever thought about this before, done anything about it, or have any ideas?

I like the rubber mat solution. I'm thinking of doing a tailgate reinforcement and adding a rubber mat instead of the factory plastic.

I hadn't thought about spray on bedliner before, I like that idea. My father in law will be redoing the bed of his taco soon, I may have to go get the leftovers if I can't find rubber to fit...or another solution before then.

Also look at that stick on, no slip tape they use in boats. You can get wide pieces and it's pretty durable.

@Mobtown Offroad makes a reinforced tailgate solution that is lined. Maybe check them out?

I was looking into their bed lock boxes and came across that solution.

Thank you for the plug but to be honest, it might not be the best solution. Our reinforcement plate is almost just as slick as the plastic bed. I had the same issues with my dogs even with our plate. The ribbed one did help some if you wanted to go that route.

Gotcha. Thanks for clarifying. It appeared that it was lined with textured material in your photos. I apologize for the confusion!

I think a spray in bed liner is probably your best bet for friction. An upgraded tailgate kit wouldn't hurt either. Just spray it with bed liner so you get the gritty texture and you'll be good to go I'd think.

I'd love to have one of those BedRugs some day when I do a topper for the truck. However, as a synthetic carpet it's NOT going to be slip resistant when wet. You need friction to prevent slipping.

The Home Depots in my area sell outdoor carpet by the yard. Get a piece of black or grey, cut it to fit and stick it on with double sided tape or maybe some pieces of hook and loop if you want to be able to take it off and on again. I bet you would be under $20.

It is a textured powder coat for durability, but it does get a little slick when wet. I've almost busted my ass climbing out of the truck.

I think his dog would be fine standing on damp carpet.

Didn't even know they made a tailgate mat, I'll have to examine further. After thinking on it all day I like the tailgate mat or a diy version, maybe out of carpet, the best

I used Herculiner on a boat and its grippy. Very grippy. It uses rubber granules to create the texture. Goes on with a roller and a quart kit is more than you will need. If you go black you will want a UV topcoat so it doesn't look like ass after a few years in the sun. I spent a few extra bucks a different color and colors are (at least were at the time) UV stabilized. Seven or eight years later it still looks good.
