    This effin' Furd is going to land me in the loony bin. So, I got the thing all put back together yesterday--new water pump, new thermostat, new upper radiator hose, new radiator--and this morning I noticed a wet spot under it right about the spot where the lower radiator hose hooks to the radiator. I figured I just didn't have the clamp in the exact right spot so I adjusted it and fired the thing up to let it pressurize to see if I stopped it. Got it hot and shut it off. Then I got up under it to see if it was still leaking...just in time to nearly get a face full of scalding hot water when the damn bypass hose that's (permanently) tee'd into the lower radiator hose blew out. Now I gotta replace the damn lower radiator hose as well. I'm never gonna get rid of this thing.

    So, I tuned my new antenna tonight. These are the results...

    Radio and equipment: 1990 Cobra 25LTD Classic (peaked and tuned), 9' Firestik Fire Ring coax, Firestik dome mount on the roof with a medium duty spring.

    3' FS Firefly Antenna:

    SWR on Ch1: 1.5
    SWR on Ch40: 1.7
    SWR on Ch20: 1.1 (the needle was actually slightly under that)

    I left it slightly biased toward the lower channels since Ch4 is the default trail channel and I'll probably be down there more often than I am on the upper quarter.

    With the 2' FSII antenna, it was...

    SWR on Ch1: 2.2
    SWR on Ch40: 2.2
    SWR on Ch20: 1.3

    As you can see, one foot more antenna netted me a huge improvement. I should get out a lot further now and it doesn't look too retardedly tall. Still going to be slamming it into a lot more stuff than I did with the 2 footer, but hopefully the firefly is flexible enough to take it. As long as it can take the abuse, I'm extremely happy with the new setup.

    You could probably achieve similar results with a 3' FSII. Just depends on where you mount it. Since mine's mounted on the roof, I wanted to go light weight with a flexy spring since the thin sheetmetal up there oil cans quite a bit. The roof is the optimal mounting spot though...highest point on the truck with a nice ground plane. However, if you wanted to mount it on the tube going across the back of your cab, I'd probably go with the FSII on a standard duty spring. I think it's a tougher antenna and it'd stand up better to being slammed into low hanging limbs. :wink:

    Make sure to attach your plastic cap good, lost mine at Citrus. I used hairspray, spray the end of the antenna then put the cap on. It's strong enough to hold it on but you can still get it off if you need to tune it.

    Haha, weird. The one on my 2 footer welds itself on. If I need to tune it, after I finish prying the cap off with a screw driver, I grease it and I can still only get it off by hand for a day or so before it starts welding itself back on again. o_O

    1997 t4r has super duty axles, 5.13s locked front and rear. 3 link front with 14" kings. Rear 63s.
    I need to get a spring and mount and a firestick 2 going with a 4' and then I just need to mount it all and find a spot for the handheld

    thats where I was thinking of mounting it actually, great minds think alike haha. I have the antenna and cable on my saved list on Amazon, but need to look for a spring and order all that stuff soon.
