I have a 1999 manual Toyota Tacoma with 240,000 miles on it. The fluids have all been changed at a regular interval.

In the past I've had some rare and random trouble getting into 1st and 2nd gears but no serious issues.

Yesterday, I put my car in reverse and tried to start it up and it stalled out rapidly. Now the clutch is stuck down and I can't get the gear out of reverse. Every time I try to start it up it stalls right away.

Car is stuck in reverse. Can't move it back to neutral when car is running or off.

Any ideas on what could be going on? I am not the most car literate person so not sure what is going on.

Truck is at 240K and I'd like to add another 200K to it. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks

Not a very good description of your issue.
Sounds like it could be a bad clutch master cylinder or clutch slave cylinder .

Have you checked the clutch reservoir for fluid level?
Any leaks under the vehicle (hint, clutch fluid) ?
Can you shift the tranny into all gears with the engine not running?
Does it stall with the tranny in neutral?

Updated post. Will check fluid levels when I get home. No leaking going on. Car is stuck in reverse and can't shift into any gears whether car is running or off

Next thing I would do, is crawl under there, and take a look at the clutch slave and fork.
If you don't know what to look for, then take a photo of it, and post up.

Can you get the car out of reverse without depressing the clutch pedal?

To me it sounds like something with the clutch hydraulics, like Rick said.

+ 1 for hydraulics. If you clutch hits the floor and stays there your slave cylinder is probably shot. If you've never replaced those components before than 240k seems like they lived a good life.

I had a similar issue. check the clutch line for leaks and the slave cylinder for leaks. If you don't see any leaks, problem is likely the master cylinder as mine was. I'd replace both (master & slave) as they're relatively cheap so you have some piece of mind.

Thanks for all the information. I checked it out last night and there was no leaking going on. Got it towed to the shop today. How much did the master&slave end up costing you?

I picked up an Aisin slave cylinder for $10.95 on Amazon - it was open box but new.

Should have taken the e-brake off and had someone at the front and rear bumpers push the truck forward and backward while you tried to unbind the trans. I bet it would have worked. You may still have a crap clutch or trans, but it would have gotten you into neutral.

Seems as if it a clutch linkage issue according to the auto shop. Looks like they will be replacing the clutch linkage. Is this the same as master and slave?

Hydraulic clutches don't really have a 'linkage'. They might be simplifying the terminology, if they think you don't know too much about cars.

It's probably the part that connects the clutch pedal to the slave cylinder rod that broke and that's what the shop means by the "linkage." That happened to me once.

The clutch pedal connects to the master. I replaced both for under $100 Canadian. Super easy. Shop will likely be double. If it's the pedal 'linkage' to the master they will have to replace the master.

After you repair the hydraulic issue do yourself a favor and replace the nylon shifter bushing. It will shift like a new truck.
