I'm currently exploring the possibility of mounting a small hydraulic pump to my engine to run a hydraulic winch.

So I'm wondering if it's possible to wire up a switch and knob to control idle rpm.

My vision is this, say I want to start winching, I flip a switch in the cab that engages an electromagnetic clutch and begins turning a hydraulic pump (just like the A/C compressor). The engine is at normal idle at this point. I can then control the winch with its controller cable. Then say I need more power (hydraulic power, that is). I can flip a switch in the cab that moves throttle control from the gas pedal to a dash mounted knob which I can turn to increase idle speed.

Theoretically the rpm can be controlled with a simple rheostat, right, since the throttle body is drive by wire? I'd basically just be using a SPST switch to transfer control between two different "gas pedals".

I know many gas driven hydraulic systems use some kind of idle-up control, though it's not always adjustable. I assume some systems idle-up automatically with increased load. And some probably have a simple high idle that raises the rpm to a preset limit, say 1500 or so.

So do y'all think this is possible?

There are two hall sensors that measure throttle position and both must match, it's not quite as simple as you would think. There is already an idle up circuit on the inverter you could use.

    I see...

My truck does not have an inverter, I don't think any 4 cylinder came with them, but I'm not sure on that. Any chance the idle up circuit lies dormant somewhere in the wiring harness?

Either that or I could just keep a brick in the truck for placement on the gas pedal!

So the more I thought about it the worse the idea of a throttle knob sounded. I'm liking the idea of a high idle circuit, though.

Anybody have any idea how the high idle works on the aforementioned inverter equipped trucks? Since its drive by wire, is it some sort of resistor, or non adjustable rheostat? It wouldn't use the cold start injector I imagine.

    Anyone have wiring a diagram?

No cold start injector on these trucks. Here's the inverter schematic. Signal you'd want to ground is the ELS2

For us slow folks with a 2.7 (2010) would need to ground pin 20 on E7 connector under dash (black wire with white stripe)
