Hey guys I've searched all through the site and couldn't find any answers to my question.

Im in the market for a 1st gen Tacoma and don't know if i should go with the TRD Off Road package (without 4x4) or just buy a Tacoma with 4x4. The price isn't the biggest concern I'm just wanting to know if Ill get the same, or close, capabilities as a Tacoma with 4x4 when it comes to off roading if i were to just opt with the TRD Off Road Package Tacoma? I won't be sinking it in mud, going through snow, or climbing rocks but id like to be able to get through trails, smaller mud puddles, sugar sand and onto roads that a 2wd can't get to.

My biggest concern is buying a tacoma and getting stuck! i know it happens but tacos are known for their off road capabilities so i want to make sure i get the right truck for me.

Any input would be great help.
    Thanks.

Get a 4x4 with the TRD Off-Road package.

    Best scenario is above^^

If not, get 4x4, its better than 2wd with a locking diff

A TRD off road 4x4 is certainly your best bet, but the terrain you are describing could easily be conquered in an SR5 4x4 and some upgraded tires just as well.

I have a TRD O/R and have yet to use the locker or other gizmos that come wth the package. These are very capable trucks.

If you're going first-gen, low miles and maintainence records should be high on the criteria list.
