Tacoma's are way expensive in my area as well. I recently bought a 2011 DCSB with 60k miles for 22k, it was certified so it came with warranty.

When I first started my search for Tacomas I started looking at lightly used and anything with less than 50k was only very slightly cheaper than a new one. They are like gold around here though.

Around my area it's hard to find a good/cheap one. Paid 14k for a 06 4x4 access can had a cap as well. Had 190k on it, but new frame, brakes, tires and brake lines.

When looking for mine my budget was less than $20k and I was looking at trucks under 80k miles - for just a few thousand more than $16500 you can find a 2nd gen with less than 100k miles; it is afterall an investment, and they retain their value - If you took out a loan to buy it and spent $19k on a taco with 80k miles rather than $16.5k on one with 160k miles, then 5 years down the road its paid off anyways, and you still only have 120k-140k miles on it. Many used car loan vendors give an interest rate incentive if you finance a minimum of $15k.

I ended up going slightly over budget, but found a truck with 51k miles - a worthwhile tradeoff I'd like to think.

Hold out for a great deal!! The less of a rush you're in the more you're in control when negotiating price and finding the best truck.

Got a 4x4 2012 DCSB TRD OR with 51k on it here in North Alabama for $24.5k. I had been looking for a Taco for a while and my top dollar was $25k. I got it from a dealership and I'm the second owner but turns out the first owner was actually one of my old buddies from my hometown and he traded it in for a new F-150. Had all service records and the truck had never seen the mud.

He told me the dealer gave him $23k for it when he traded it in so that helped out when I was negotiating. They put new tires on it (Rugged Trails but meh they're new) and put in all new fluids so they didn't really make much on me after all was said and done.

I wanted 2012 or newer with less than 75k on the odometer so for $25k my options were looking pretty limited and I was starting to think I'd have to compromise and get a PreRunner instead of 4x4 then this thing popped up.

Also I went to high school with the salesman I bought from and the GM of the dealership turned out to be an old friend of my dads so I'm sure that helped… its nice being from a small town sometimes lol.

I'm just rambling now but moral of the story is just be patient, there's always something out there and sometimes the stars align in your favor!

Nice truck and you guys are awesome. I might have to save a little more and bump my budget up to $20k 50-80k mile Tacoma and shop around for $20k because after all they are a good investment. It seems like $16.5 is hard to find a low mileage Tacoma or I could settle for a prerunner because here in Tenn we don't see a lot of snow and I won't be doing too much off-roading. Just want the 4x4 for the just in case factor.

Your call on the 4X4, but most guys are going to say to get it just in case.

I have a PreRunner - don't need 4X4 - and paid about 23.5k for mine brand new last July. There may still be some left-over '15s that you could get a deal on. However, you're sacrificing that capability, so that's your call.

And yes, we are pretty awesome here. Except the trolls, and oh, are there trolls. :spy:

Well my 1 generation Tacoma is a 2wd trd with lockers and it does decent in the snow. In the past I always had 4wd drive and I rarely used it. So this time around I want another but I not going to let these high prices get the best of me. IF the price is right who knows

Just purchased in the southeast fall of 2015.
    2006 Access Cab, 4x4, TRD Off-Road, 4.0L V6, 6sp manual, Leer topper, 124,500 miles - $17,400 out the door

Frame, suspension, brake lines, various other things replaced under the recall. New tires and brakes. No apparent modifications to the truck (all stock). None of the fluids looked bad and Toyota report showed where they'd been replaced at the same dealer per regular maintenance schedule it's entire life.

The truck does have obvious rust/corrosion problems in spots. I plan on taking care of these first and foremost to prevent further issues.

Nice truck and Like the camper.. I live in the southeast region also and Its amazes me how these dealers round here think. The dealer contacted me today about that 2006 4 door trd 4wd with 160,000 for 16500 and ask me if I am still interested. He said he do whatever to make me happy and I told I'm am still looking. If he wanna make someone happy he needs to drop the price several thousand. Thanks guys for the pics and your deals keep them coming.

Good on you for being patient. Too many people fall in love with vehicles and end up paying too much or buying the wrong one for them. Also, keep in mind that the initial used asking price for a dealer is likely thousands over what they would 'really' accept for the vehicle. I always look up trade-in values on the truck to get a good idea of what the dealer likely paid for it, and go from there. The worst they can say is no!

I would have a hard time paying 14k for a truck with 160,000 miles, even a Tacoma. My general rule of thumb with vehicles is that the cost of the vehicle should work out to somewhere between 10 and 15 cents a mile not including maint and repairs.

So if you pay 30k for a vehicle you should get 200k out of it to get to .15 a mile. Your target could be different based on what you are willing to pay for luxuries etc and will go up over time given inflation.

Nice general of thumb and it makes good sense.I have made of my mind to pay a little more with less miles and not settle. I want something under 100,000 on so I gotta save mo money and wait a little while longer. Great advice. Thanks
