Wow that's awesome and a trailer lifted with 33's would be badass! What's the company called?

Didn't take long for me to chop this new bed to pieces.

Turns out, when you've done it a time or two (or 4) before, the process actually goes reallyfuckingfast.

The fabrication of bumper mounting plates out of 3/8" A-36 plate, however. Did not go as fast. My drill bits are upset with me now.

Anyway, new design. Simpler, should be strong and slide off and over objects pretty effectively. Going to finish it tomorrow, it's 90% tacked up now, just gotta add a few small filler plates, install the receiver, and then I'll get to burning it in.

I may have cut an extra half-inch off on accident...But hey, it's straight.

Burliest mounts I've ever made. Mostly because I thought what I had was 1/4", not 3/8".

The tape is there to mark off the hitch location.

Looking awesome! Plans for a swingout on this one?

Plans are there, just trying to figure out how I want to make it happen... I want to figure out something more like a Tiregate in how it mounts (not removing the tailgate), and use two 3/4" rod ends as pivots. Ultimately I'd like the swingout to be able to safely support a bike rack... For now it'll just be bumper, the spare will have to reside in the bed until I gather materials to start on the rest of the scheme that's rattling around my head.

If I get time today, I might build a bed rack with a scrapped roof rack project that never materialized...

Your bumpers are always so sexy. Even in their incomplete phases

I finished it last night... Took longer than anticipated, but I also wasn't able to get the garage clear for me to begin work till almost noon. I'll take pictures at some point in the next few days, I might just wait till the new lights come in and get hooked up ;)

On a side note, after some discussion yesterday with a friend, I started wondering about the merits of doing a tiregate style carrier and pulling off the tailgate, reducing the amount of stuff to open to access the bed... Whadda y'all think? I'd build it so the top edge is in roughly the same location as the top of the tailgate, so that a topper would still close on it effectively, as well as skin it with sheet metal so contents can be secured.

Sounds really interesting. I just put a topper on mine but love the swingot bumpers. I'm curious to see how this would look.

Not sure how popular it would be but I really like how the Honda Ridgeline tailgates opens down and to the side. Be cool if you can build something like a tiregate strong enough that can hold a spare and still do that. That way you can still just fold down the tailgate and use it as a table.

Was bored today and decided to start on modifying the sliders a bit, they came pre-welded and I'm not a huge fan of the angle they were at. There was a solid 2" gap between the door and top of the tube. So I ran to Denver and figured I'd kill some time.

Cut off the passenger slider and welded it back on. Closed the gap from the door down to 1/2-5/8".

Finally got around to rewiring my tail lights. After the bed swap I didn't have turn, tail or brake on the driver side, but had very half-hearted reverse. Passenger has most things, but far from perfect. Established a bit ago that the main wires had good signal, but everything down from there got all screwy.

So I cut everything out and started from scratch. Now whatever corroded wires were causing the problems are gone.

I don't recommend doing this for the pure enjoyment of it, but it's not a bad way to avoid patching in a bunch of jumper wires.

Started today by installing the new reverse lights. I had a tap break off in the steel that wouldn't come out, so I cut the head off the bolt that was hoping to live there, and epoxied it into place...you'll never know which.

Weatherpack connectors were the theme of the day. Blessing and a curse, they're reliable and clean, but it's time consuming to get there.

The wires doubled up are the common connections between both sides, ground, tail, brake, and reverse. The two single wires are passenger and driver turn.

Had to add a connector to the tail lights as well, since I was uncertain as to where exactly the problem originated.

Craigslist win of the month. $40. Only thing wrong is the rear window glass is broken and door frame is a bit bent. Otherwise it's in terrific shape, even has carpet lining!

Truck is now too many shades of white, still debating bedlining the whole thing, possibly in white.

Did you lose width when you cut them off? If so how did you extend them?

I probably just lost 1/4"-3/8", about 1/8" in curf of the cutoff wheel, and then another 1/8" to a 1/4" from the angle change. It's a subtle change, but it's noticeably better looking, nice to have the sliders a little tighter to the body.

I don't normally drool at wiring jobs I see on TW, but when I do, they are sexy as fuck.

Got stir-crazed today, so my dad and I decided to go out to the garage and bend the topper door a bit and try to straighten it out. The PO backed into his garage with the door open, bending the shit out of it and breaking the glass. Good for me, in that I got the topper for cheap, bad, because that sucked to fix.

I might dig around tomorrow and see if I can find some polycarbonate for a reasonable price locally (and on a Saturday), and cut it/secure it into place.

If this doesn't go well when the door makes it back on the truck, I'll resume my hunt for a new door, or reconsider making a frame with steel. But this is pretty near straight, so I'll likely leave it.

Started on something new today. It's all 1-1/4" tube, the clearance at the highest point of the roof is 7/8", clearance at the lowest point is 2". Deflection under my weight is pretty much nil, I think it's like 1/4" if that.

I got the ladder portion burned in as well as the main 4 standoffs, and tacked on the footrail, then cleaned up for the day.

I tacked the rail on without adjusting for the curvature of the roof, so I'm coming up with a plan on how to handle that.

My plan is to build a little brother to this that'll mount to the cab eventually to create a nice full platform front to back. The front of the cab rack will also allow for a skinny light bar to be mounted. There's also clearance on the sides for some small led lights for camp/work lighting.
