OP...It seems the consensus is this noise is normal. Let us know what your dealer says. And I will do the same next time it is at the dealer.

us techs have raised such questions to our fts (field technical specialist) along with questioning people at regional headquarters when we go for training and they all tell us its normal, that the high pressure fuel pump and direct injection system is noisy....etc. So far, I have over 2k miles on my 3rd gen and all is well. But its leased so I'm not excessively concerned about the drivetrain. I will never not be under warranty.

OK, I got my car back from the dealer. Here is how what was done to the car.

    1. Rear bumper was adjusted so that both sides are even now (no replacement was done) - I have not had a chance to get under the truck yet to see what exactly was done. No big deal, problem solved.
    2. The noise I was hearing from my engine compartment was indeed the self cleaning technology. The dealer compared it to two other tacomas and the same thing was observed. Initially when I walked it and I asked them if it is the self-cleaning technology, they had no idea what I was talking about (a bit embarrassing on their part). They left me with the following article which explain the new technology:

    http://wardsauto.com/technology/toyota-advances-d4s-self-cleaning-feature-tacoma

I am satisfied with the answers and solutions unless someone else things I should peruse other avenues.

Thank you for all the replies.

The article sums up exactly when I hear my loud ticking. I always here it at a hot idle. Getting mail after my commute or when jumping out to get a gate.

I'm wondering if one plant is considered better than the other, QC wise?

The diesel sounding engine is something that will bother me more and more as I drive the truck, I don't mind hearing a great exhaust note but a ticky engine just bothers the dickens out of me. If Toyota knew the engine was noisy why didn't they install sound deadeners on the underside of the hood? I'm thinking of installing something like this http://www.amazon.com/FatMat-Hood-Liner-Self-Adhesive-Automotive-Deadening/dp/B00H6X4V7C , has anyone attempted this yet?

I cannot hear the hot idle injector cleaning from inside the truck. I can only hear it from outside near the hood. What are you hearing?

Well, the tick seems to be getting worse and worse, went for a ride to get some froyo and it is very noticeable inside the cab with the windows up, tick tick tick tick tick at idle, I've never owned such a noisy vehicle engine wise, maybe I need to head to the dealer, but it looks like others have done the same and just get told it's normal. I checked the oil level earlier, it's not low.

Still waiting to hear from my dealer. Can you give me any more info on how they fixed your bumper? Mine says there's no adjustment there. Who is your dealer and was they fix given to them from Toyota?

Hmm, I can't hear anything on my 2016 TRD Offroad, nothing at all. Mine is real silent: because it's been at the dealer for the last three trying to figure out why the brakes randomly lock up and why the front driveshaft failed destroying everything it could reach....

I gave up, for my sanity , thinking I needed to only accept a perfect world. My '02 2.7 had a engine knock when cold, thought it had a broken lifter or something, other gremlins continuing throughout its 157k miles.
If the shop says that's what it is, well, go for a drive, and smell the roses. Life's to be enjoyed, not fretted over.
