So I'm looking to put in some tool chests and cabinets in a room...the room currently has carpet and I want to create a level hard surface without removing carpet. Won't be the whole room just along the walls about 24" deep.

What's the best way to go about this?

I was thinking about plywood on top of carpet and then like those square garage surface pieces over the plywood then the cabinets/chests on top?

Any adverse effect over time to the carpet? Thanks.

Just my opinion--The carpet will show where the load was placed if and when you try to sell. I would remove the carpet and replace it with laminate flooring.

Ive had my treadmill in a carpeted room for almost 6 years now, on fairly plush carpet. The wheels that adjust back and forth for height are on 3/4" plywood, which has the same carpet stapled to the top to match the rest of floor. Whenever i need that room and fold up the treadmill, a quick rub with feet usually gets rid of the flatness
