Hey guys, has anybody had experience at Holcomb valley campgrounds? Their main USDA FS website says its open year-round and I'm looking to go camp out in the snow this coming January or February.

Any preferred camp sites? Or any idea if they get crowded in winter, which I doubt... but 19 sites all walk-on/no reservation.

I'm pretty familiar with Big Bear city but I've only camped at Serrano and the first yellow post just north of Fawnskin (non developed site).

Also, the main gain north of Fawnskin towards 3N14 just past the houses, do they ever actually close that gate?

    Thanks!

I usually go during the spring/summer for rock climbing. But I did go in the snow a few years back and it was open. I highly doubt the campgrounds would be crowded, but if they are you can continue to Holcomb Valley Pinnacles campground and camp wherever. No water or bathrooms though.

I camped last year at Holcomb valley the week between Christmas and new year and was the only one out there all night. Very primitive feeling.

I'm waiting for the next multi day storm to wheel abs camp there again.
