Who's buried in Grant's tomb?

 

This Jeep has been in this spot for the 20 years I've been riding here and when I first saw it, it looked like it had been there at least 20 years. Someone once told me the story behind it but I can't remember. I can tell you it's way back in there and not sure how they even got close to begin with.











The trail you see in the fore ground is about wide enough for a four wheeler and twists back and forth, switchbacks, up and around the Jeep. it's pretty steep and the Jeep is in a ravine like it started at the bottom and tried to follow the ravine up.

 

Sasquatch.

 

Interestingly enough he was stationed at fort humboldt only 10 miles or so from this grave. Controversy considered, maybe his body evacuated New York and landed here?

Benjamin Rush State Park is located in the North East section of Philadelphia and is the only state park within the city boundary. The park provides the visitor with an area to enjoy the natural beauty of open spaces along with some Pennsylvania woodlands, places for study, recreation and the solace of gardening. The park offers much needed open space in this busy area. It is popular with hikers, bicyclers, birders and wildlife enthusiasts and is primarily used for passive day use activities. The park features one of the largest community gardens, a large area devoted to flying radio controlled model airplanes, multi-use trails that meander through open meadows and shady wooded areas.

Apparently the remains of an old farm homestead on the property.

I logged a solid 4.6 mile walk doing this last week. I was doing work on my iPad while walking (I like & need the exercise ).
There's no close place to park to get to these ruins.

Awe-man, I got all excited thinking someone added some pics! Let's see if I've got anything. ..
Found this pic, it's an old abandoned house that sits off and old rarely used dirt road near Highland Lake, in ME. This cottage has probably been vacant for 30 yrs at least. I think recently someone removed a large porch from the left side as well as cut the power lines leading to it. It's a shame, it's a cute little house. Would love to see inside it again. Last time I went in I was probably 8 yrs old. Looks I'm the photo to in better shape than it is, it's actually very lopsided.

 

More from the local Pennypack area. This is what's left of a very large mill from the 1800's. Unfortunately it's located on "private property" and this was as close as I could get without being illegal.
I'd love to get closer - I've hiked & jogged by here countless times & only noticed these ruins recently.





I'd say these two foundation buttresses are at least 7-8' tall.

There's also a long stone wall partially collapsed but I could not get a good shot of it.

Again, I've passed it countless times since it sits about 30' from the old rail line. Just seeing it now with everything bare for winter.

The rail line was constructed in 1878 which gives me a rough guess on the age.

Lastly, I don't think there's been anyone breaking the speed limit on this road in a very long time. Look carefully at the upper left corner you'll see some abandoned power lines.
My guess is that this was an old access road to the nearby church complex. The power lines terminate about 100 yards in and have long been disconnected. The road surface is nothing but gravel. I think the only traffic it sees is from the local beekeepers who have hives hidden in the field nearby.

I used to live in Southern California about 30 minutes from Glamis. I used to live in the middle of the desert and the Army uses a section of it to parachute and test bombs. One day I went out and found a whole parachute left behind. MINE! No pictures of it though. I left it when I moved.

Here's another old Mill site along the Pennypack - this is about a mile and a half downstream from the other one and not nearly as big.





I'm parked in the background of this one. There's a very old but still occupied farm house with accompanying barn & such further back to the left.


You can see the old rail line bridge in the background which is now the bike/hike trail. This is all that remains of the foundation that bordered the creek.
