    Guys,

I really appreciate your help with a new Christmas present we are giving to my son. I am very tech savvy but have never setup a gaming console (other than a Wii). I have not unboxed it yet but have read that there is some initial setup and other things to get it ready. We have our own domain so setting up an email account will be easy but what else do I need to be prepared for?

The physical setup will be a snap. I plan to use a wired connection rather than a wifi. It's the account setup and other things I would like to be prepared for.

    All help is appreciated!

    Merry Christmas.

Be prepared to wait forever if you don't have super fast internet. If you buy the game online it has to download it to the console... I just got an Xbox and it has been. Downloading a game for the last 24hrs and its at 20%

Be prepared for slow updates and install times

Mostly just prepare to have patience. Updates are kinda on the slow side and downloading the games takes forever. I'd start the updates and whatnot before doing something so when I get back they are all done.
Oh and you will need an Xbox gold subscription if he wants to play live and you don't have one already

I've read that if you disable your internet connection before installing a game from a disc it will go much faster. After the disc install then turn on updates which will allow you to play the game while updating.

Any thoughts on initial account setup with Micro$oft or Xbox live? Does each person in the family need their own account?

Most games will let you have up to 4 "save" slots. So each person can play on their own level/stage without having multiple Xbox accounts.

    More questions.
The TV I was going to use is very nice, but an older 720p resolution. Also, I don't have a sound system, just the speakers on the TV. Will this be a problem?

Nope not at all. Same thing I'm running. They do make a headphone adapter, so if he has a nice set of headphones he could use them for upgrading the sound.

Got it setup. Destiny took about 20 minutes to load then another 3 hours for the updates. Everything went smoothly except my son was upset because the wireless slowed to a crawl while it was updating. He kept asking me to reboot the wireless cause "something is wrong!". I finally took him out to go Christmas shopping while it finished.

He was extremely happy this morning when everything worked and he could play immediately!

    Thanks guys!
