Hey guys, new on here and have a question. I have a 2010 Tacoma sr5 with roughly 90k on it, got the truck with about 75k. My issue is a loud whinning/growling from the rear end area that has progressivly gotten louder to the fact where I have to have my radio blasted to ignore it. Now my first thought was fluid. So I drained and filled with the specified fluid needed. The fluid was as expected old,
Loss of viscosity and a tiny bit of metal nothing out of the ordinary, the problem still is present. So I greased the u-joints, and checked the center support bearing/bushing for play and nothing is out of the ordinary and the problem still persists. Anyone have any ideas ? Anything is apriciated thanks!

Your going to have to verify that the noise is coming from the rear axle. If your certain disassemble is required to inspect the pinion and carrier bearing. This is something you want to do sooner than later to prevent grenading the rear axle.

I would take the driveshaft off and remove the rear tires than brake drums. Grad pinion flange and spin by hand. It should feel smooth without roughness. Try to move the pinion flange up and down. If you feel any play the pinion bearing are going to have to be replaced.

It's probably not the rear diff. How did you check the driveshafts support hanger? Take the driveshaft off and spin the bearing by hand.
