I have the stock h/u with a 5ch alpine amp with bass knob, 10" jl sub and jl speakers in front and rear doors. had it installed a few years ago. sounded good but when I had it done but recently it just started to sound like to much bass. I turned down the bass knob on the amp all the way down and the bass on the radio to 0 and still sounds like to much bass. did I blow my speakers, amp, radio? not sure what to look for.

If it sounded good before and not now I'm not sure why.

When I bought my truck I got a brand new 12 in. Sub put in. It sounded like crap with too much bass. Adjusted the low pass frequency on the amp from about 60 to 80 and it sounded much better sending more frequency to catch the different low sounds rather than just the lowest. Also adjusted the gain directly on the amp.

Some things to try. By no means am I an audio expert though...good luck!

The initial improvement over stock is what may have impressed you, but after more time in the seat and getting used to how the system really sounds may had you realize that it still needs frequency response manipulation. Quite common, not to mention if any speakers have loosened up over time. Basically it sounds like you need a simple retune.

The bass knob on the amp is a bad thing to use from my experience. It can only boost, not cut. Better manipulation would be achieved through crossover and level adjustments while leaving all tone controls flat. If that doesn't suffice, the next step would be to incorporate a headunit with a good EQ and maybe even even time alignment to tighten up the sound.

I don't think it was something I noticed over time. going to work one morning I noticed it right away. had to turn the bass on the h/u all the way down and then the bass knob on the amp all the way down. I would try to adjust the amp to see if it makes a difference but I don't really know what im looking at so I will have to wait to take it to shop.

I haven't had a chance to do anything with it yet but when I did look under the seat at the amp I didn't see any rca cords just a lot of wires.
