Anyone with problems concerning disengaging from 4wd to 2wd especially after heavy snow environment, simply unplug the cable from transfer case and re-install while motor is running(under driver side).
This was effective on a 2008 Tacoma trd and may be also effective on other years.

I've had it lock up when making the change when stopped. Since then I always make sure I am rolling when going from 2wd to 4wd or 4wd to 2wd, never had a problem since.
