For convenience I use my iPhone as a GPS. Doing this, Does this add to my data usage? Does it matter which navigation app I use?

Hope this helps you I found this online via google search...... The iPhone is equipped with an integrated GPS antenna which, when combined with the native “maps” app, can create a rudimentary GPS. GPS operates outside of the cellular signal, communicating directly with satellites to determine your position. Every other feature on the iPhone, however, relies on cellular towers or Wi-Fi networks to transmit data. This can result in the GPS using a portion of your allotted cellular data.

Most apps do use your data to load the maps. Such as apple maps, google maps, waze...

Some apps allow you to download a map of a area you will be traveling to before leaving. So if you use wifi at home you can keep your data turned off while on the road.

Google maps for iOS now allows this. Setting is called "offline areas"

I use offline GPS apps such as Here We Go or NavFree on my iPhone 6 Plus. But it's annoying to use it as a GPS when people are calling or texting you, so instead I bought cheap Android prepaid smartphones, added 32gb microSD cards and downloaded offline GPS apps such as Here We Go, NavFree, MapFactor and Sygic. These apps allow you to download maps by state, country or region, so if you're limited by space you can just download the areas you need. You can use these apps like a standalone GPS unit and not have to worry about using data.
