Removing grille clips

I need to remove the grille on my 96 Taco. Someone removed it in the past and broke some of the clips. Thought I would ask what is the best way to release the clips so I don't break them. Thanks.

Take a small screwdriver and depress the center peg in either direction. You dont need to bend it much for it to release.

With the age and how they work, you will break some. They are a pain.

 

My technique is to use a very long flathead to push down on the clips, while simultaneously gently pulling the grille. Do each one at a time, first the lower/upper clip and then the one vertically adjacent. I usually start with the center, pull out that section first, then go to the left or right side and pull out that section and then the last. Essentially you want to get the clip "unseated" enough so that you can loosen each section at a time and eventually pull the whole grille out.

This may only apply to 01-04s, but:
There may also be a couple of lower clips on the bottom left and right corners, just reach up under the front bumper, feel around for the clips behind the headlight fillers (it's like a U shape clipped into an I shape, you want to separate the "U" clip on the grille from the "I" clip on the headlight assembly to pop it out) and pop those out too, those are the last step, both for removal and reinstallation.

 

Thanks for the replies. I will get some clips ordered, since some are already gone. I'm going to be replacing the anemic horn with twin horns.

Take a chunk of change with you... Toyota is really proud of these clips.

 

I finally just ordered a bag on eBay for cheap and keep them on hand for whenever I have to take the grill off. I find it easier to replace them than to kill myself for 15 minutes getting one dang clip out.

 

I'm not going to grace the stealer's door. I will get them off ebay.

 

I've got a few of these broken on mine too. How much did you end up paying for them?
