Picked up our new 2016 Tacoma, and planned to save a few hundred dollars by installing the Toyota VIP alarm myself. This is what I did with our 2001 Tacoma, but now we have Techstream.

So the new truck has key-less entry, and the "Hood switch dummy connector". I have been told all I need to complete the security system is pn PT398-35160 (RS3200 w/ Glass Breakage Sensor) ~$170.

We have a local mechanic who works on Toyotas out of his private shop, and is equipped with Techstream.

    I have two questions:

    1) I was told that new software would need to be downloaded to the RS3200 ECU. Like flashing a ROM. Is this correct? I would think the RS3200 ECU only needs to be enabled via techstream.

    2) Can I do the mechanical install at home and then drive the vehicle across town to get the system enabled? I am fairly sure the Truck should be driveable prior to activation, just want to be positive about that.
