Hello, all. I am new to the TW site, having been introduced to it by a seller of a 2010 TRD Off Road that I am interested in. I just sold my 2004 Reg Cab in order to find a 4x4 my wife and I need to get over the Sierra Nevada mountains during the winter. The 4x2 just wasn't made for plowing through any kind of snow or ice.

I live in northern California, above San Francisco in the wine country near Sonoma, CA, am retired and am seriously looking for either a good used pre-2016 Tacoma 4x4 with crew cab, but am undecided as to whether I should look for the Sport or Off Road model. I have no idea how different the ride and handling are between the 2016 and earlier versions, and am rapidly trying to get educated in order to not make the mistake of buying something, only to find out later that I wish I had purchased another version of Tacoma.

The 2016s seem to be nice, but the dealers don't budge an inch on price (hey-it's difficult to even pin them down on an out-the-door price), so I may just opt for an earlier version of the TRD.

So....count on seeing my questions. Anyway, I'm glad to be here.

Thanks for the info, JW. The TRD models have Bilstein shocks (as far as I know, and I might be wrong) that may be the cause of the harder ride. I am wondering if merely changing out the shocks/struts on the Off Road or Sport model would improve the ride.

I like the features on the Gen II TRDs, but would use the 4WD only occasionally. We own a small patch of property in the Sierras and can't access it during snow weather unless we have a 4WD, otherwise I would just buy a Pre-runner.

Any thoughts on changing out the struts/shocks, and/or any other modifications that would improve the ride?

    Thanks,

    Smitty

i have an 08 trd sport and love how smooth it rides. I need a new shock in the back and was thinking of finding something aftermarket maybe even a small lift but I don't want to loose the ride it has now.
