If you are talking to me, I only made the point that a hybrid would be the same price as a diesel IMo and I always felt you were of the same mind. My POV was that you knew they would always be more expensive.

That is the best we could hope for in hybrid trucks. A series hybrid is much less complicated but it will not ad substantial
Mileage if any. It will be more drivable, not need a transmission and should be more reliable. They would also be much better balanced with no trans and an electric drive in the rear.

Did I call it or what? It's like moths being drawn to a flame....the word diesel shows up and people just can't help themselves.

First Tacomaworld post for me, but here is a video regarding a Toyota pickup Diesel:

    Watch at 57min.

And then there's this more recent one regarding the Tacoma, but less talk about the Diesel:

    I hope this helps OP.

Very good cleared it up for be. Thank you. So it basically is just the emissions really that hold Toyota back from introducing a diesel. Won't talk politics about my Honest opinion on emissions.

You are correct. The EPA is killing the diesel, since 2007.Reliability on newer diesels in the US is falling on it's face.Nothing like going into reduced power because a sensor in the piss tank is wacky.Or having to drive it longer because it is bitching for a regen of the DPF.And the maintenance costs are much more than the past.Someone I work with wants to get rid of his Denali 2500HD,found out it is more bother than it is worth.Yeah it is cool with all the gizmos, but exceeded operating expenses.Nada value has it at about 12k less than purchased 14 months ago.I told him to hold out and sell it to some sucker that will just drive around town and ruin it.

To be honest, as a VW TDI owner, I miss the low end torque of the diesel.

I need to rev up on hills or else I stall? Huh?

The rest of the truck is darned nice, though. Except for the Nav.

Yeah, I wanted a Hilux or Amarok.

The US private transportation has evolved into a gasoline based system. Toyota does not get into diesels for private trans but hybrids instead. The only way to make diesel cars competive long term over a hybrid here, is to cheat. VW did it for years. I see diesels being a factor in private transportation when we somehow convert them all to Nat gas.

We live on a two and a half mile private road. I maintain it in the summer by grading it and installing culverts, my neighbor's plow it in the winter. I use a diesel in the summer with my tractors and winter with a blower. My neighbor's plow with diesels in the winter. That's what diesels are good for.

Besides, we have the wonderful Atkinson cycle in the Taco that gives us amazing economy, outstanding drivability and an abundance of power. Who couLd want for anything more ? :der:

Good stuff, if anything it confirms why we buy Toyotas. Swears had some excellent points.

The first video, the old guys were kinda funny...complaining about China's pollution and having too many cars, then complaining that the new generation have a lack if interest in cars.

It's pretty drivable and once you hit 3krpm, the power kicks in pretty good. Just, for hill starts, the low end torque and un-stallability is something I miss.

Yes. One thing drivers of high torque engines like is the linearity of deliver. If the power matches the position of the throttle without waiting for the RPMS to catch up with the requirements, they are happy. There is something about gauging the distance you have to pull into pAssing traffic and a linear throttle response that is reassuring. E motors have their Max torque at zero to their max RPM. Most mistake that for E motors having more torque. They don't necessarily. They have available max torque all the time. The 3.5 seems to move away from that idea and not towards it as many would like.

Toyotas have always had high revving engines, I think the new 3.5 is pretty damn peppy compared to previous Toyotas I have owned, and how often to we drive at maximum torque/horsepower anyway? Toyota builds these light duty trucks for longevity and not for being racers or ultimate tow vehicles.
