    OP, this is a great idea, so the following is only intended to help others looking here:

    I'm not huge on K&N for my intake, but for the cabin, they make a washable filter that is only $19 more ($38.99) than the ones at the hardware store you have to cut ($19.98). Plus, they are made for our trucks, meaning they have a seal around them -> they will create a much better air seal, with a higher quality of filtering. At roughly 4x the cost of a factory filter, they're still a fantastic deal!

    Just sprung for the K&N for the $55....total impulse buy but I hate paying $20 for the paper and while the OP's idea is great, I don't have the patience for trimming and fitting and I make it way harder then it is.

    +2 on the K&N, has the electrostatic recharge kit to give it back that fresh smell it has for the first few months. Did have the home depot adjustable washable electrostatic filter cut down to cabin air size. No problems with it, just decided to splurge on the K&N since it had the recharge stuff for it.

    (Spencer) Post 194. I notice you're from New York. Is that cotton on your cabin filter? I'm from Northwest Texas, very windy, very dusty, but we grow a lot of cotton out here & my cabin filters look like that after 10-15,000 mi. We also get really hot weather and I've learned that if your air conditioner suddenly quits blowing cold air it does not necessarily mean it's low on Freon or has a bad compressor. I discovered a dirty cabin air filters can cause that, also. Luckily I decided to change it prior to taking the Tacoma to a mechanic. Also, just like the engine air filter, the cabin filter needs changing more often in many driving conditions/environments. For me, engine air filters at least every 15,000 and cabin filters even oftener. I've got 5 or 6 extra cabin filters, always the cheapest 'internet specials' I can find from any brand name I recognize. Engine air filters are different: Toyota, Baldwin, or NAPA/Wix, only.

    "A while" turned into about 5.5 years. ROFL

    I had a company vehicle for a couple of years that I drove 90% of the time so there wasn't as much reason to change it out and since it was brand new I decided to just leave it... until now. This project ends up taking a lot longer than I had anticipated. It's not complicated at all but it is time consuming so plan accordingly.

    Also, the pics in the first posts have been nuke'd so if anyone can rehost/edit that post I'm sure others would find it useful.

    Bump for a good idea to replace your nasty cabin filter.

    I use those also. Because they are treated with charcoal, they look dirty even when brand new. The stealership told me that my cabin air filter was dirty even though it was a week old, lol. They wanted over $100 to replace it. I thought that was near criminal.

    The exact same cabin filter the dealer installs is available on the net for $6.50 ......and less if you are bored and like searching for such stuff. I put a cleanable unit in mine and told the dealer to not touch it - but they took it out anyway (unbeknownst to me) - and the next time I went to clean it I found a piece of paper shit in there - the "factory" part!!!
    They've also ripped two nearly new wiper blades showing me they were "cracked".......

    I HATE TO GO OVER THERE!
