So the time has come... After having the 4runner for a 20 months I am getting around to documenting what I have done with it! Now, keep in mind I am not going crazy with this "build". My goal is to be able to keep it comfortable enough for long highway trips, and capable enough get into remote hiking trails in Colorado.

    Most current pic.

    ================================================

So a little background. I owned a 1996 Tacoma. Bought it from a family friend for 4 grand with 212k miles on the clock. She assured us that is was "perfect" and was recently checked out by her mechanic. Well, it overheated on the highway on-ramp leaving town . I battled that problem the 9 months that I owned it. It came to the point where the only thing that wasn't replaced was the head gasket. It wasn't something I wanted to dump a bunch more time and money into so I sold it... for exactly how much I bought it for. I told the guy who bought it about the highway overheating problem.

I did have a lot of good times with that truck doing local runs and meet ups.

When I was in the market for something new I wanted a Toyota and always wanted a 3rd gen 4runner. I test drove 2 before I made my ultimate selection. I know that may now be enough, but after a month of looking there were only 2 with a manual and a locker in my area. The first guy wasn't willing to negotiate on price, and was offended I even tried. Craigslist

This is my 4runner the day it came home:

    171k, Rear E-Locker, 5 speed manual.

I got a little side tracked by other hobbies and life stuff so the 4runner stayed stock for the first month, but in the last 6 I have been giving it a ton of attention.

I was accepted into the brewing program at CSU. It was a blast, but it was a lot of work. I learned how to make beer from the guys behind New Belgium, Odell, Coors, Budweiser, and Avery. There were an additional 12 breweries that I visited or toured that aren't as nationally well known.

I see this thread as more of a way for me to document my adventures if someone is interested in visiting somewhere I have been hopefully I can be helpful!

I am a Soil Scientist, so I get to do some cool stuff outside, some of that might get thrown in there too.

I live about 100 miles from the nearest Toyota dealership, so everything is ordered online and shipped. I know there are full guides on all the parts numbers out there, but this is as much for me as the next guy.

Lift-I went with Bilstein 5100s for the Tundra on the front and back. Tundra TRD springs on the front and OME 906 on the rear. I like the way the front rides. With a lot of weight the rear feels a little spongy.

I used these links to help- The video in the first one was really helpful. Springs:

    Tires

I got 265/75R16 Goodyear Wrangler Authority. I went with the Walmart tires because they offered the best warranty of any place nearby and have locations around the country, so finding a service center isn't too bad.

My spare is a 235/85R16. Same Authority tires. There is about an 3/4 inch clearance between the tire and the panhard bar. I wouldn't go any bigger down there.

So, I live in the San Luis Valley which can be a dump, but it has some cool things going for it. One is the Sand Dunes. If you are in the area I highly suggest you take a visit!

While at the Dunes you can take the 4wd road up into the mountains Medano Pass Road

I never air down, they tell you to, I have done it in street tires no problem. Technically you can access the park from the east side over the pass, I would recommend against it. The reason primarily being that they close the road if we have a big water year, so you can be almost all the way to the dunes and come across a metal gate. At that point you have to go all the way around anyways. I am not sure what the deal with camping is, but I believe along the road is first come first serve. There are bear in the area, so be aware. There is a campground, which I have never been in but it is rather large, reservations should be made far in advance.

Few pics of the upper road:

Bugs can be REALLY bad. 2014 there were none, 2015 you could hardly be outside they were so bad.

http://www.nps.gov/grsa/planyourvisit/weather.htm Good place to find weather and river status. I would stay away November-the end of May. Winter is cold. Spring is usually full of dust storms and awful wind, on the dune field it is miserable in the wind.

Western edge of camping 37.802768, -105.497086 If I remember correctly you can only camp in developed sites and no OHVs.

My favorite place to "chill" or take people from out of town is here: 37.771419, -105.507244 I don't really care about TW knowing cause I wouldn't mind running into anyone up there!

If you are in the area I recommend Zapata Falls. pretty cool waterfall down some Precambrian granite. Water can be COLD in july 2 years ago it was 50f. 37.618953, -105.553134 There is a hike up to Zapata lake which is really cool. It is 4 miles each way and steep.

    I like to get high...

It all started when my buddy asked if I wanted to go into the mountains and do something stupid...

Living in Colorado we have so much access to the mountains it is great.
One "hobby" I developed in the second half of 2015 is climbing 14ers. I did Mt. Bierdstat about 10 years ago with my dad. This year I climbed 10 in a little over 2 months, it did help that I did 4 in one day...

Decalibration loop- We hit the trail around 1:45am yay. Summited Democrat around 4am and caught the sunrise from the saddle between Democrat and Cameron.
    dDMjhwxDmNOQ8ttGmtZcTmdHUDEtvpovgErcdndi_361f5758b1ddb31637c1f73ca6cad1717bca533a.jpg
The next big hill was Cameron. There were 30mph winds and it was well below freezing, and I was wearing shorts... so needless to say no pictures of that. The next peak was Lincoln.
    dcNY6cEzaatysVVIQSoAfQt9mkxwJPoZvWjrmWDc_97801ccf0bac784cf2a97708fbc8913227fcdc4f.jpg
The 4th mountain in the loop was Mt. Bross, which is private and they do not allow access. nut lets just say that the 12 mile loop of 4 peaks above 14k feet took 6 hours.

Handies peak was a fun one, just off of the road to Cinnamon pass it is worth the attempt. Possibly my most favorite one so far.

Then I took my "problem" to a new level. I climbed Quandary and it was a zoo!
    Ub1koOcYOMQMwzNPr8PS5GPPCCQZQt_pP2z8pgbr_750a3e57dafc2e0646f8ecc0b4eaf661859bc592.jpg
hundreds of people, definitely not the nature experience I wanted... So I started climbing at night, which is dangerous and stupid, but so fun.

Mt. Sherman- easiest one I have done. 2 hours round trip.

Antero- The 4wd road is a shit-show. Too much traffic, too narrow a road. I did really enjoy this one. It is a road that goes within 300 vertical feet of the top... but I walked it... because I have a problem, remember?

    Mt Princeton
hit the summit around 4:30am. Big mistake. It was freezing rain, I got cold and wet. So far my least favorite climb.

    Mt Elbert
Tallest mountain in Colorado. 2nd favorite climb. I made the decision to climb during a thunder-snow storm, and a mini-blizzard at the top, in shorts. I now own pants.

...then I decided to put this

on it's side. A week later I cut a tree down on myself. Both ankles got kinda f'ed up. I tried to climb Mt. Massive in October, but with my leg issues and snow/no snow trail problems my snowshoes had to come on and off every 100 feet I decided another day!

I like your style. Those are some awesome places you've been. Looks like all the effort is certainly worth it with those views.
I've thought of giving it s try. I do it on a smaller level already. Guessing your ankles are all better. The marker you have that states the mountain and elevation? What is it called and do you bring one wit you to every summit? Make it yourself? Cool stuff,,

Thanks man. The 4runner gets me to some cool places. The stone and paper were at the summit's. People seem to leave them up there. I always get a picture of the survey marker. Usually they are beat up from people trying to steal them. Don't make for good internet photos.

    7a2b604e5776ada3f4c240c5f6b46ed3_fdb195d48f97e43a4c48e29b0dec675168f3c915.jpg

Ankles happened after all the peaks. It is a bitch to get them into ski boots... Sunday was epic by the way. We are going up on the 27th of January if you are around.

I am going to climb a few 14ers near you this summer. Near engineer pass. If you want you are welcome to join!

Did the diff breather mod today.

I originally used a write up on T4R, but I think @ramonortiz55 did a better job on 4runners.com

    https://www.4runners.com/threads/re...locate-3rd-gen-4runner-version-pictures.1159/

    Notes:
-Only used about 5 feet of hose, I used fuel injecting tubing, just cause.
-The breather on the 4runner was a 14mm and the new one with the union fitting was a 12mm.
-My fuel cap appears to be larger than some, and I read a few horror stories of people filling their diff by mounting the breather low, so I mounted it across the top.

    Blue wire mod:

Find Blue wire with red dashes

Cut blue wire. Leave as much room as possible to splice a ground wire from the plug.

I prefer using solder to crimp connectors. I used a white ground because I had it lying around

I used the bracket that the kick-plate snaps into. I used it for my remote locks and it worked well, so I reused it.

    Great success!

I was going to, but it's during my graduation haha.

I love the whole desert around that area. AZ, CO, and UT are amazing.

I'll be at RT next year. Maybe the runner will be ready for it. If not, I'll camp and tag along with somebody in a real rig haha

What is your degree in? I graduated in 2014!

I totally agree. I love exploring the area! Lake Powell is 6 hours, Moan 5 and Mexico 13! haha

I am going probably going for a night or two. I really want to do Lockhart basin. My build isn't for the more aggressive trails.

The money will be nice. The real life responsibility won't! haha

I'm also gonna be living in Los Angeles so I might as well just sign my landlord up for my payroll because my whole check will be going to him every month.

Hopefully I still have some leftover cash for truck stuff and investing.

    Changed my fuel filter yesterday.

    9b34279620ad14a8915d527d40fcb903_b55228fe1cad3f3e9d34543463f7ccb440c1e09c.jpg

Not difficult in terms of tools needed, just tricky to not spill fuel on yourself. I parked on a steep incline and that helped I think. Making sure the bracket is clamped to the fuel filter before the bracket is mounted to the body makes it go much shooters.

    14mm
    19mm
Plus a few metric sockets with extensions to get the extensions to get the bracket off.
