    Hi all,

This is my first Tacoma and I'm already planning on a number mods / upgrades. Going to use this thread to track it all. I'm not planning any huge Off-road upgrades since I'm happy with the Off-Road package already, but I will be making some functional upgrades that may or may not make sense to most on here.

    Review: (coming soon)

    Wish List:
    • Rock Sliders - Ordered
    • HID's - done
    • Grille - Waiting to install
    • Driving Lights
    • Interior LED's - done
    • Mud Flaps - done
    • Weather Tech Mats - done
    • AMP Bed Extender - done
    • Bed compartment box locks - done
    • Tinted windows - done
    • Protective mat for back seats - done
    • Custom Bed Storage Box Seals - In development

Here is what I've done so far..

Bed Storage Compartment lock and seal

Goal was to secure and try to waterproof the storage compartments at the back of the bed.
Sourced the following from local hardware shop
    • 3x Mailbox Locks
    • 3/8x3/16" rubber foam
    • JB Weld
The locks fit perfectly into the existing latch holes, no need for drilling. I went an extra step and reconfigured the tumblers so that I can open all (3) locks with the same key.

Although it works, I suggest you not re-configuring the tumblers since you cannot remove the key while in the open position. This is important for the larger compartment since you need to open both locks at the same time.

Assembled: You will need to slightly bend the lock arms so that the fit snug against the compartment latch slot. Each door latch area has a small tab that keeps the OEM latch from accidentally going to the open position, I used these tabs as reference when bending the metal latches.

After test fitting is confirmed, load the locks into place and apply some JB Weld to the outside of the lock cylinder. Wait for 1 hour for the JB Weld to cure, then stick some rubber form around the outside of the door.

Installed: the doors fit real snug with the foam. Hopefully this provides a good enough seal to keep water out. Its been raining all week, but I just got this done yesterday after the rain. So I will have to wait for another rain storm before I can confirm they are water tight.

Overall I'm happy with how they came out and optimistic they will deter water and perps.

In this pic, the green circle outlines the tab I use for measuring the distance from the door plate to the metal latch. You want the metal latch face to sit just below the tab.

The blue arrow indicates where the JBL was applied. I applied JBL on this face of the lock cylinder and all the way around to the other side.

Just a quick update on the bed compartments..

After a light rain last night the weatherstrips seemed to have worked and kept the water out. Per someone else's recommendations I'm gonna work on covering the drain plugs next. Now that the doors are sealed there's no real need for the drain plugs.

Why don't you just put one lock in that compartment and put the factory latch back in the other hole?

I thought about that, but if you go that route, someone can open the OEM latch, bend and still gain access or even have an easier time breaking off the whole door.

If I had to do this all over, I wouldn't re-configure the locks, instead have (3) different ones with (3) different keys and label the keys.

Heres a bracket I rigged up for the front flaps. The bracket mounts to the bolt on the underside of the truck. I bent it 90 degrees at the blue mark, then used a rivet and some washers to secure the bracket to the flaps. Allot of this was trial and error. The best solution I found was lining up the flaps with the top bolt first. Lay a piece of paper over the flap, mark the top bolt and general outline of the flap. Then I removed the flap, lay the paper template over the mounting bolts and mark the 2 other bolts on the paper. After I lined the paper template over the flaps, used a tap to mark the bolt patter and drilled out the holes. I'm very happy how they turned out.

Now the truck is ready to go wheeling, maybe tomorrow :)

    Sub'd!

Hey! I also have a 3rd gen, DCLBOR in white. I got the Aluminum full skids from Pelfreybilt, look awesome and wasn't too hard to install. I also have on order the Snugtop rebel, should also be coming in this week! Some other mods ive done were decals for the "tacoma" in the back, plasti dip the front grill, and going to put in some new HID's for the headlights and fogs, hopefully tomorrow. Also got some awesome

Looking at the Group buy for the Prinsu Designs roof rack on TW too. Group buy opens Feb 25th.

I am working with Baja Kits in Orange, CA on a Kings coilover package with their own UCA's and Deaver AAL's, everything should be in about 3 weeks.

I'm already in the deep end on this project.. LOL
