Just like the title says my father gave me his 2000 tacoma xtra cab prerunner v6. He now has a 4x4 2nd gen double cab long bed v6. Now i really like this truck and would like to do so much to it. i am a stance guy coming from lowering cars and all that good stuff lol. At first i really wanted to lower it about 3" and get wide fender and wide wheels with big tires to make it sit kinda flush, im not talking about slamming the truck like the 4cyl tacos. Now as i have owned it for 2 month, all those plans have gone down the list and now i just really want to make the truck 4x4 and go off road. Now there this guys on here selling the complete conversion, except for the trans, only problem is its from a 4cyl manual transmissin and mine is 6cyl automatic trans. Can all that stuff bolt on my truck? And ill just buy a 4x4 v6 auto trans and that is? Thanks for reading!

I would add a rear locker and good tires. If you find that you aren't able to do the kind of stuff you want to do off-road, sell your truck and buy a 4x4.

    Twerks.

    Welcome to TW.

Is your dad cool with the mods you're planning or is it a "here you go, do whatever you want" kind of thing?

you can do a 4x4 swap for a decent price is you find all used parts and can do the work yourself.

but if you cant do the work yourself, I would buy a 4x4....

Yea he just gave to me to do whatever to it. He even told me to sell the truck, but i want to keep it as long as i can. He bought the truck back in 2005 with 64k on it. Now it has 258k so i want to see how many more miles i can get out of it.

Cool deal dude. With that kind of mileage you may want to knock out some maintenance items and frame health before dumping coin into mods.

From the sound of it he's probably kept it up pretty good, but I'd address any lingering maintenance needs first, then get on mods.

if I were you I would do the 4x4 swap......that's just me though... it can be done in a weekend.

so your getting cv axles, front diff, spindles, front drive shaft, transfer case, (im sure there are a couple other things I could be forgetting... ) for $500? if so I would probably jump on that!!

A few OE parts from fancy trucks
My suggestion is a bit different than many will be............

    1) make sure all maintenance and safety items are in order. This could take a while and cost a few bucks, but if you'll study up and DIY, you'll learn a lot about the vehicle.

    2) instead of immediately trying to make it something it isn't, learn to drive it well as it is. I've taken many an engineers lunch money by driving further in 2wd than they could in 4wd before getting stuck. Sometimes it's about the driver as much as the equipment.

    3) as you learn the strengths and weakness of your truck, related to how you regularly use it, you'll be able to develop a plan. If you build it to support how you'll use it 80% of the time, not how you might use it occasionally, you'll enjoy the vehicle and using it more.

    4) shop a lot and buy once. It's always better to pick the right parts the first time, even if they are more expensive and you have to save longer for them. Being disappointed in cheap stuff that doesn't work well or breaks takes all the fun out of it being cheap. Then you still have to do it over again at the higher price.

    Enjoy the experience, play safe!
