I get that a 2016 air dam will help the mpg on a 2016 truck, my question is whether an air dam designed for. 2016 would yield similar results on a 2nd Gen truck.

175 aint bad. I still would like to get one from those who don't like it for perhaps a little cheaper.

So you make your money back after 90 highway miles. Seems like a hell of an investment to me.

I can vouch for increased fuel mileage with the dam. I had a '16 Double cab SR with the XP package (unique to Southeast Toyota). I got about 20 mpg around town. Drove it to Hickory, NC from FL and got close to 25 mpg. Made the mistake of going to the dealer to "browse" and ended up trading my XP for an OR. I liked the upgrades in bells and whistles. Had to throw in some cash but...anyway my mileage of the way home dipped to about 21. A significant drop. The OR gets about the same mileage in town but on the road is a different story. Gas prices make it tolerable though. Still might like the idea of having a dam to put on for road trips. Anyone know if it can be an easy fit on the OR with the skid plate, etc.? Another observation....the different gear box on the OR could be source of some noise from the rear even at city speeds. Maybe it's the Kevlar tires. Or the lack of the dam lets wind just go under truck which at highway speeds is even more pronounced.

Have a 2016 TRD Sport. Took off the air dam the day I bought it. Would be willing to sell for $125 if anyone is interested. Live in southern Illinois. Could also ship if needed. Message me and let me know.

It's an obscene exaggeration. You can see this from published EPA numbers. 4x4 2.7L 5-speed models have the same engine and tranny between 2015 and 2016. The 2015 model is rated for 18/20 mpg (city/hwy). The 2016 model is rated for 19/21 mpg. ALL the aero changes from 2nd gen to 3rd gen (including the taller tailgate and cab-bed fillers), together with the 2016's taller final drive, are worth 1 mpg on the highway. The air dam on its own is worth maybe 0.25 mpg.

Those are frame extensions. They serve to protect the steering tie rod to a certain extent off road from straight-on collisions. You can remove them pretty easily - just one bolt on each side. On 2005-2015 they are exposed:

I installed the Air Dam on my 2016 DCSB 4x4 OR. I have seen ~1MPG on the highway. I did remove the tow hook from the right front (two bolts) and then the Air Dam bolted right on. I didn't want to hack up the Air Dam because if it made little difference OR if I didn't like the looks, I could resell it. if I end up keeping it on, I'll modify it to clear the added two hook assembly on the OR.

Did you have to remove the tow hook in order for the air dam to attach?

Yes - I removed the cast tow hook assembly on the passenger side. The air dam can be cut the clear it, but like I said, I didn't want to hack it up in case it didn't make much of a difference. Considering I have A/T KO2's (265/70/17), I made a 24 mile trip yesterday (65-75MPH on highway) which was 80% highway, 20% city and ended with 21.1 MPG. That's the best I've seen since swapping tires/wheels and during my last fill-up, adding a few miles due to the speedometer being off a little bit, the hand calculation and computer were dead on. It does seem to help.

Thanks for the reply. Going to pick one up this weekend. Will remove the hook before going to pick it up.

Thanks man. I'm averaging 22 mpg with wheel/tires stock, no lift. Happy with it so far. Have a long daily commute so excited to see how/if this makes any improvement. Don't do a ton of OR, but will just keep the tools in the truck to swap out the dam/hook as needed.

I took mine off pretty much day 1. If anyone is interested in Eastern NC I may be interested in selling.

I've kicked around tossing my stock OR wheels/tires back on for a tank just to see what the difference really is. I do know the truck averaged better MPG prior to me switching tires/wheels. I also have an Extang Trifecta bed cover and I think that helps a little bit as well.

Picked one up today for my OR 4x4. Averaged 22 mpg on the day down and over 23 on the way back. Same fuel. About 3 hour drive each way. I know it's a very small sample size, but leaves me with hope it'll continue to make about 1-1.5 mpg diff. Time will tell.

I took a drive from Sacramento to San Francisco on I80 today. Total round trip was 213 miles and I averaged 20.4 MPG (cluster - last two checks were dead on) in wind, some rain, hills at a speed of 65-77 at all times. CHP was out there today - thank you Uniden LRD950 and Waze. :)

Overall, I'm pretty happy with that result considering I'm running a larger tire (BFG A/T KO2, 265/70/17 Load C).
