My light comes on with 3.5-4 gallons left.

I don't worry about running it down to 2 gals left if I know where the fuel stations are. Otherwise I will fill up at a quarter tank. I also don't see why they would design a pump for 21 gallon tank that will die if you run it down to 1 or 2 gallons left. Might have been true for the first in tank pumps, but I hope the newer ones are little better.

"In order to get 18MPG+ in the 4.0 V6, you pretty much have to keep the RPM's below 2000 at all times. On the highway, on your accelerations, everywhere. If you keep the RPM's 2000 or below, you should easily hit the 18MPG range."

Problem for me is, on a 2wd V6 6speed, 2000 rpm is 55 mph. 2450 rpm is about 66-67 mph, which gives me about 21mpg.

Nothing special that I can think of. I've always used synthetic oil, the filters are changed as needed and I kept the factory plugs until almost 100,000 miles. That would have been about the time I bought my 2nd set of aftermarket tires, but there have been no drastic changes in tire type.

I've not babied mine and gotten 18+mpg. In 2010 my BIL and I drove my 2007 DC 4X4 from N Georgia to NW Colorado to hunt. We had a tight schedule to get off work, drive 1700 miles, hunt and return in time to make it back to work. We drove 30 hours straight taking turns sleeping in both directions. We were often driving 80mph+ late at night on rural interstates. I averaged 18.5 mpg for the trip even loaded heavy with camping/hunting gear.

The next summer I took my wife camping in Colorado. It was a much more laid back drive where I stayed within the speed limits, but most of the interstates in the west have 75 mph limits. We drove on a lot of back roads and mountains including up Pikes Peak. The average for the trip was 19.9. I'm certain I'd have broken 20, but my wife burned 2 tanks driving in 4th gear instead of OD. Mileage on those 2 tanks sucked, but I got 21+ on a several tanks in flat land in Kansas and eastern Colorado.

Now for normal everyday driving in a mix of rural roads where I live and small town city driving I normally get somewhere between 16-17 mpg. But on the open road 18-20 shouldn't be a problem. I'm actually thrilled at 16-17 mpg. Almost 9 years ago the F-150 I traded in got about 13 mpg city and 17 hwy.

I hear a lot of people talking about the 6 spd. vers the auto on the highway and the only thing I can say the EPA says they get the same highway mileage the auto does better in mixed driving. My over all mileage is right about 20 with the 6 spd. granted I live in the willy wags and have to drive 8 miles to even find a traffic light but it is doable. The V6 likes higher RPM's my shifts are generally around 2500 if you are pulling any thing or good and loaded 2000 RPM is the very bottom you want it to go.

4gallons left when gas light comes on. But I always keep my gas at 3/4tank and above because some retard posted that a full tank cools my fuel pump that also cools my rear diff.

No need to worry about your pump wearing out unless you run out of gas.

    http://www.autohausaz.com/html/fuelpumps.html

    Why Fuel Pumps Fail

Electric fuel pumps run constantly, so after many years of service they can experience wear in the armature bushings, brushes and commutator. Pump vanes, rollers or gears can also wear causing a gradual loss of pressure and flow.

Accelerated wear may also occur if sediment or rust gets past the inlet filter sock. In some instances, a pump will fail because contaminants entered the pump and jammed it, causing the motor to overheat and burn out.

Your fuel pump relies on fuel passing through it for lubrication and cooling. Consequently, fuel starvation can be another factor that accelerates wear and may even cause pump damage under certain operating conditions.

1/2 gallon or 3 gallons or 1/4 tank are all the same since none causes fuel starvation.

    Don't run out of gas.

I'm old enough to remember 11 cent gas but I'm also wise enough to know I have enough gas to go at least 50 miles and then some with the low fuel light on. Even out here in the sticks the closest gas station is only a 1 1/2 miles away.

The engine requires around 35 PSI of fuel pressure if air gets into the system the pressure drops the engine quits pump saved because non running engine management shuts off the pump. It's stupid to run out of gas but once it's refilled your on your way. The pumps have come a long way since the early GM pumps more than once I had to lay under a Chevy cop car and beat on the tank to get the @#$! pump running on a restart. In the 35 years I worked on vehicles I replaced one Toyota tank pump.
