BHLM question

For those of you that did the black head light mod, when you put the lens and light housing back together did you clean all silicon off of lens and in housing groove and put new silicon or did you just add more silicon into the groove and reassemble? Did anyone heat it back up before reassembly?

I know a few people just used the original silicon. I did too. I just pressed it together, stuck it back in the oven, then took it out and tried to press it together again. I need to redo mine because I've got some fogging issues. I'll prob. just put more silicone on it next time.

 

DO NOT USE SILICON. Sorry for the caps but I need to stress it. Silicon tends to evaporate and fog up your headlight. It may not do it right away, but months or years down the road. After it dries up, it leaves deposits on the top of your headlight lens.

What you should do is (this is what all retrofitters do):

Put half the headlight back in and bake for about 5 mins with the oven off, after preheating it to 300 degrees F. Then clean off all of the factory sealant while it's still hot. Go to your local auto part store and buy 3M Windo-Weld. It's $18 for 15'. Put a bead in the channel of the headlight, heat it in the oven for 5 mins with the oven OFF after preheating it to 300 degrees F. Remove and press the 2 halves together and hold with gator clamps (Home Depot, $1 each). Should cure in 30 mins and good to go!

 

I reused the original sealant. No fogging after 6 months so far.

I did reheat the parts before re-assembly.

 

i've done several and have always reused the OEM sealant, havent had fogging issues in over 2 years!!

 

just reheat the lights thats what i did and havent had any leaking. there is way more than enough of that grey gooee crap to be able to reseal them.
