Inline sixes are awesome. But doubt that will ever happen. If anything if toyota follows the current trend of tiny 4 banger turbos the 4th gen tacoma will have 1.6L twin turbo direct injection 4 banger screamer.

very true, probably cause they aren't the most fuel efficient. But very very durable and powerful

I am about to give my 2011 TRD Offroad 6-spd manual to my father-in-law who is badly in need of a vehicle, which puts me in the market for a 2016, but comments about the 3.5's lack of guts at the low end (relative to the 4.0) are worrisome. I have searched for a dyno chart comparison between the two engines, but no luck. Can anyone point me to something like this??

    Go drive one.

With the ECT button on, it's not a huge difference.

Thanks for making me aware of the test drive option :<> That said, I'd still be interested in a link to some dyno charts.

    You're very welcome.
There are no dyno charts, yet.

I haven't seen one from toyota since comparing the 5vzfe to 3vze.... would be nice...

Understood... but surely they have dyno tested their engines or they would not be able to report peak numbers, so I am a little surprised these charts are not published somewhere. I don't doubt the veracity of your claim, just surprised.

I drove a 5th Gen 4Runner(2010) for 5 years and traded it in for my Tacoma(2016). I have only had my new truck for a week but I feel that I have something to offer. My 4Runner served me well for 97,000 miles and I had no problems or complaints. The 4.0 definitely had more torque down low and the power was adequate for what it was intended for. The 4.0 is not as quiet or smooth as the 3.5, but who really cares, its in a truck.

My very first impression of the 3.5 was that it felt like a smooth, strong 4 cylinder in it`s power delivery. I will now say that after having some miles on the 3.5, I am very satisfied with it`s performance and refinement. My 2016 Tacoma has plenty of power and I have no complaints.

Hmmm... glad you're happy with the power and I appreciate the feedback. I'm still concerned as this and other comments always seem to have an underlying tone suggesting that the new 3.5 sacrifices some guts in the interest of appealing to the masses. My 2'nd gen has all the "refinement" I need and everything I read smacks of Subaru no longer offering a manual tranny in their Outback and slowly turning it into more of a Soccer Mom car. Bad Subaru! But I digress.

Anyway, I suppose I will have to go test drive one, but there is no such thing as a 2016 3.5L with a manual transmission on the lot around here. Hence my search for some DATA (dyno charts) instead of subjective comments. Thanks again.

What the heck was toyota thinking about this 2016 underpower tacoma!!! When people purchase trucks they need torque and throttle response. It feel like your carrying the truck on your back. My brother owns the 4.0 thats got some degree of response. By purchasing the 2016, I think I made a huge mistake.

I agree, it does seem more lethargic in 1st gear. With the 1gr-fe you can smoke the tires without launching, just ram the pedal into the carpet and you're blazing.

Wow, just saw this. I would probably prefer the old engine for towing. The new engine for unloaded driving.
