Hey guys, so I have my 2004 Toyota Prerunner 2.7L and i'm wanting to do a 4x4 conversion on it. I thought I might as for some help with some questions regarding this. I know I am not an expert mechanic but I know for sure that I want to convert it, I don't want to buy another truck or get a second a second 4wd vehicle. I want to keep my truck and convert it.

I know I will need a transfer case, cv axles, drive shaft, the J-shifter, transmission, and the locking hubs.

My first question is if the engine on my prerunner is the same as the one on the 4x4? My guess that it is, I haven't been able to get that confirmed from any site I checked.

Next, I know that the 1st gen Tacomas run from 95-04 but are all the parts interchangeable? or only some? For example, can I get a transfercase from a 97 Tacoma and put it in my 04?

Next, is there any recommendation on online stores that might have used parts or that are more reliable? I know I will be looking for parts at salvage yards but more options are good.

Next, is there anyone on here that has done the conversion that can give me ideas on how to approach this project?

This is what comes to mind at the moment, I appreciate tips or any advice that can be given. And please don't suggest getting another truck guys I really want to do this I just need some help.

    Thanks!

The '97 TC will work with your motor.

    Good luck with the project.

the PreRunner and 4x4 are the same except for the 4x4 parts. so yes, Engine is the same.

if you search the first gen section there are numerous threads of people accomplishing this. and most have a parts list to help
