I'm looking for input/guidance on the best way to set up a roof rack that can be moved to the bed when necessary and vice versa.

I currently have the OEM roof rack. It's... ok. Obviously not the best but it carries kayaks and snowboards just fine. However, I'm looking for something stronger and more versatile. Really thinking about a Prinsu or FrontRunner - a flat utility style rack with no basket, and T-slot system would be nice, but not critical.

What I want is to be able to use this rack interchangeably on the roof and in the bed. Anyone done something like this?

    Current set-up:

Looking for something similar to this to be mounted both in bed and on roof:

@zscott I would appreciate any input you have!

What size kayak or you putting on the stock rack? I got a 10' kayak I hang out the back of the bed, but it eats up all the room for my gear. I thought about putting it on the rack but was afraid at highway speeds it may get dicey.

The yak is a Perception Phat - 8.5ft and around 40lbs. I usually throw it up with cockpit facing down and lash through the wire eyelet on the boat. Been thinking about getting a J-style yak rack but I'll wait till spring.

Mine is about 50 lbs. I'm more worried about the wind stressing the rack than the weight.

Since front runner uses similar platforms for all their racks you could easily buy their roof rack, and then by the legs for the bed rack version and move the platform back and forth. It would look kind of weird though when just the legs were in the bed, or just the rails were left up top.

I also am not sure how hard the platform is to remove from the front runner side rails on top.

    Thanks for the reply.

I thought about that too. I was thinking it would be easiest to move (and look better aesthetically) if the two legs on both the roof and bed had a crossbar on them at all times, and the platform could be swapped to either with a clamp that connected it to the crossbars. I'll try to draw a rough sketch tomorrow to better visualize..
