[SOLVED] Howling noise between 35-45

Thank you. I'm solid now. I only noticed mine today, and one other time. Both times the wind was blowing pretty hard. I'll get some tape out this weekend and wait for the TSB. Thanks for the sleuthing skills.

 

Be aware this noise was not dependent on outside wind conditions. The noise would be there without any wind. Created by the wind moving over those surfaces between 35-50 MPH.

 

I understand, just only happened to notice it with wind.

I still would like to find a truck without it and see what the differences are if any.....Toyota may have found this on early trucks and solved it but did not want to replace thousands of lower control arms that had too many holes...Who knows.

 

You can never go wrong selling a chev.

 

I have a howling. Not sure if it is the same as reported but its obvious and often. I'll tape and report back.

 

If taping mine resolves my howling I will just go to Ace and pick up some rubber grommets of the correct size and stick them in the holes. You'd still have openings but they would be smaller the air would be more disturbed going over the holes.

 

My truck doesn't make any noise like you describe.

Instead of tape on every hole, why wouldn't you just use RTV to fill in a couple holes. What you are hearing is some resonance. To disrupt it, you only need to fill one or two of them.

If I were to do this I would fill the bottom holes with some black, all weather, RTV then tape over them for 24 hours then remove the tape.

Tape only is pretty ghetto.

this has been around for some time now...my 2011 has this and it is rather annoying. tends to be first thing in the morning when we have temps below 50*F and goes away by the time I make it to the dealer for them to look at it

 

however, for those who don't have RTV on hand, this is a relatively simple fix and most of us have tape easily accessible. not like it can be seen anyhow.

 

We already thought of this, Using insulation foam and or RTV ...But since Toyota is coming out with a TSB we decided to stay with what is simple, "ghetto" and reversible when Toyota decides what to do,

 

I can not believe the trolls are that bad.
1. What kind of people don't allow others to resolve an issue on the forum?
2. What brain dead people need to bag on a new product because it has issues?
(All tacoma had and HAVE issues, they are still awesome trucks and that's why we're here)

I suggest moderators come up with a solution to ban or discipline trolls.
Sounds silly but it's kind of like the teacher(s) that were out on the playground during recess and lunch breaks at school.

 

MAn I have 76 people on ignore. Most regarding this and other issues who do not have 3rd Gens. Taking this offline was the only option, As you can see words like "ghetto" are being used because we decided to use tape until Toyota comes up with a permanent solution. I used RED tape so people can SEE it easier. I don't care what it looks like. I am a function over form kind of guy anyway.

Now I have to worry about the guy I hit thinking "ghetto" as my truck runs over him...?? I think not.

So in the end a few strips of duct tape? Could you remove the tape, take a picture and mark the holes that need filled?

But seriously though... great job but I fear covering them holes could lead to other issues such as rusting. Perhaps you can take this a bit further and find a rubber plug that can fill the hole properly...

Thanks for getting to the bottom of this, but you were kind of adamant in a not-so-nice way that those of us who kept saying it was clearly aero and not mechanical were wrong and were experiencing something totally different than you etc. etc. You even came on another thread and bashed it as pointless because we were looking at aero solutions. It turns out it was aero. Maybe you should unignore everyone and join the group again with some humble pie.
